(29,090 posts)lost because the economy was fine, Republicans cheated, there was a third party candidate, media bullshit (they apologized years later), eight years after a Democratic administration, was so close that the Supreme Court decided.
Kerry lost because Bush was a war president, Republican cheating, media bullshit about filp-flopping and swift boating.
John McCain lost because the Bush administration had destroyed the economy after eight years and everyone was sick of war and unemployed, housing bubble burst. McCain refused to fight dirty, plus Sarah Palin was a disaster.
In 2008 there were about the same number of white people in the Democratic and Republican parties but by 2016 far more low education white people identified as Republicans. Hillary Clinton was the first woman presidential candidate of a major party with a long history of working for children, working and middle class people running on the most progressive platform in history. All erased. The election was about racial identity and lies, thanks to Trump and propaganda and media bullshit.
Nothing to do with "safe."
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
