You seem to be laboring under the misapprehension that there was a choice between the ACA and MFA.
There was a choice between the ACA and nothing.
But I guess the lives all those people with pre-existing conditions that got care, and begged the GOP not to repeal it, or they would die aren't really as important as purity.
Ted Kennedy learned that hard way what happens when you make perfect the enemy of the good. Bernie apparently had no interest in learning from Kennedy's experience with "single payer or bust" back in 1971, when Bernie was still in rural Vermont.
Here's some history on Single Payer for you, not that it will make any difference, but I'll put it in bolded text:
We might actually have something much closer to what Canada has now, if Ted Kennedy and the Democrats hadn't walked away from making a deal (because Democrats wanted single payer or nothing) with Nixon in the 70's, who was proposing something to the left of the ACA.
Ted Kennedy has said that not making a deal then was one of the biggest regrets of his political career.
