Trump and Sanders have never gone head to head in a GE. And it's clear the GOP wants him as a candidate in the GE.
President Trumps advisers see Senator Bernie Sanders as their ideal Democratic opponent in November and have been doing what they can to elevate his profile and bolster his chances of winning the Iowa caucuses, according to Republicans familiar with the plans.

The Mueller report revealed that he Russia was backing him as a candidate. A GOP dark money superpac was running ads to bolster him in Nevada, and said as much.
The GOP has never turned their guns on him, neither has Russia. No polls have taken that into consideration.
