The same state I'm in, solid red across the board, still voted to legalize cannabis for medical use -- because we know by now that its addiction potential is far less than either opiates or benzodiazepines.
Both of those often require medical detox/tapering after long-term use even in non-"addicted" patients (as they cause physical dependence), and as far as benzos go, they're the hardest of all to taper down from. But I've never heard of a person admitted to the ER for cannabis withdrawal (yes, perhaps to a regular treatment facility if psychologically addicted, but there's never a physical "cold turkey" phenomenon that can require emergency treatment as is all too common with both opiates and benzos, or even alcohol).
