I think too many people have a misconception of what being president entails and often are drawn to lofty rhetoric and a charismatic personality. Been there myself actually.

An effective president will surround him/herself with experienced, knowledgeable people, will exercise good judgment, and be able to make important decisions, often with short notice. No one person can possibly know everything necessary to lead the country, but will know who to consult. Of course, a good president will need to inspire the country and display strong leadership skills, but the job is far more complex than popular policies and memorable speeches. Often it takes great courage to do unpopular things when it serves a higher good. FDR was a master at that.

Our expectations of our leaders are often unrealistic and set us up for disappointment.
