(10,907 posts)Gays were still mostly in the closet, no gay marriage, weed was a prison offense in many states, women were just beginning to have equal opportunities, religiosity was front and center, we still had the draft, the hair wars going strong. In the 70's most "progressives" were carterized as radicals, rioters, marijuana smokers, draft dodgers, and hippies.
Admittedly I do think that most young people (or at least the ones I knew) were all united against the war and the music was far superior to any EVER. But the vast majority of Americans were by no means "Progressive" in fact we were just about to see the election of Reagan, the Bushes, etc. The beginning of the corporate takeover and war on unions. While it seems like things were better in our youth - we were really just a small minority - that is not the case today.
AMERICA IS FAR MORE PROGRESSIVE THAN IT HAS EVER BEEN.
