Bloomberg has an obligation to oppose Trump like every citizen does. He helped elect Republicans in the past which makes the job of good governance harder to start with.
I agree that the debating tactics got out of hand. Same case against Bloomberg could have been made with fewer fireworks.
But, Bloomberg also engaged in red-baiting and had no answers for key questions. That's on him.

It was ugly. My current candidate (Steyer) may have won by not being on the stage.

I think the world needed to know who Bloomberg is and that was accomplished. Tonight was necessary.
