The OP is a bit misleading. Sanders is leading overall so far in Nevada, and decisively. The OP seems to imply that Sanders is coming in 5th, whereas he is actually running first overall. The 'coming in fifth" statement is just about one demographic. Sanders position might change as more votes come in, but right now he leads.

So, another part of the OP that misunderstands- it is not Sanders strategy to win over older, more traditional voters. Rather, his strategy is to bring in many more young voters into the process who normally would not vote. His strategy is to mobilize the black vote, the latino vote, the female vote, and the youth vote. These are the new demographics for the Democratic Party.

Over reliance on older and maybe more traditional Democrats will not be a winning strategy, in my opinion. Your views may differ. Anyway, it is still early in the day and night, so we will see what happens ultimately in Nevada. Then on to South Carolina and Super Tuesday.
