Thats where most folks get confused. Its an economic theory, not a left/right ideology. There are both Democrats and Republicans who are strong free market neoliberals when it comes to economics.
Thats one reason why they use hot button social issues (guns, God, gays) as wedge issues, because they often were/are fairly close in practice on the economic stuff.
