In reply to the discussion: Why I voted Sanders [View all]JustAnotherGen
(38,106 posts)I didn't follow the 'standard operating' path - and I'm a Generation X'er.
One - I got really sick in my mid 30's due to a genetic disease.
Two - I had to move 450 miles away from home due to an awful, hopeless job market in my early 30's.
Married at 39, and we don't have children.
We are focused (at 47 and 50) on making certain our retirement/elder care is taken care of.
That drives my vote - and my mindset.
There is no one to take care of the last one standing.
That's why I'm desperate to hold onto our retirement savings, and savings accounts.
We really will need it when we are older - and don't want to be a burden on younger generations.
I'm ALL for the Y's and Millenials turning the world upside down - but remember -
There is another 'silent' generation out here and our quality of life was less than what our parents expected. We've gone through three major downturns (Black Monday, the Telecom Burst, Housing Crisis). I was out of work for a year after the Telecom Crisis and my then company stole 80K from my 401K. I had to start all over again in a different place.
I get it - but I worked too hard and have NO ONE to care for me when I am older - I need my money.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
