What "fundamental change" do we need in your opinion? Eugene Debs style Socialism that Bernie advocated? Or the Scandinavian style regulated capitalism? Those are two very different things.
What I have learned over the last 45 years is the importance of stability, especially in a democracy. Beirut in 1978, a sophisticated city ripped to shreds by tribalism, showed how fragile a civilized society can be. I have learned how hard it is to make a difference, that the best change comes incrementally and only with a national consensus. I have learned that idealism needs to be enhanced by civility and some institutional memory...and patient determination.
