(1,532 posts)1. The drugs are not overpriced. The amount of money that goes in R&D is astronomical as the FDA demands more and more clinical trials.
2. Of some 20 drugs researched, only one gets approval. Hundreds of millions spent on the other 19 are a complete loss.
3. The drugs cost more in the US because US FDA requires far more stringent GMP standards and documentation as well as far more clinical trials. In many countries, a fraction of that is required for approval. In some countries, a drug company can self-certify the safety and efficacy of a product.
4. Those side effects "rattled off" are required by the FDA. Even the most remote side effects have to be reported.
As a whole, the pharma industry doesn't make more profits than the car industry, the construction industry, the communications industry. However, it is a good scapegoat for people like Bernie because people get angry when they pay for any prescription. They are easy to exploit.
