In reply to the discussion: Worrying trend with Senator Sanders' supporters [View all]Hortensis
(58,785 posts)isn't our nominee, they'll be gone with his chances. I'm talking about those of Sanders' supporters who will not vote for another Democrat. Not those who will, of course.
And he won't be the nominee. Yes, that @25% of his current supporters who say they won't vote Democrat if he's not the nominee are very similar to the @24% who refused to in 2016. They're intractable and committed specifically to him. But in contrast, he has less than half the level of support among Democrats in general this time as he did early in the 2016 primary. The picture drawn by media, right-wing agents and Russia that he could win is illusory. His role would again at most be a spoiler.
It's not really the issues for Sander's quarter percenters, either. Last week 26% of Sanders supporters polled said they would refuse to vote for Elizabeth Warren, even though she's every bit as strong on their common issues as he is. Sanders preaches that the Democratic Party is irredeemably corrupt and must be overcome -- and the draw of that is key.
It means that come the general, Sanders' intransigently hostile sector of zealous radical and populist support will not be ours to lose but Trump's. Trump was and is the second choice of most, to keep or lose to a third-party candidate.
They're what they are. We need others to understand them, why Sanders draws them, that he drops to draw enough away from Trump to win the nomination, and that we need to be prepared for what he and they will do when he doesn't.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
