(8,148 posts)Republicans cynically chose a black conservative male to become only the second black person in history to become a SC justice. Thomas called the hearing a high tech lynching, referencing, actually misappropriating, myths of black male sexual abuse against women that led to their horrific murders and the still prevailing white male efforts to stop people of color, particularly black me, from power positions.
Thomas and Repugs created a chilling political effect on the hearing Dems. Biden made some attempts to challenge Thomas. No he did not stop the Repugs from attacking Hill. That is not hearing protocol. Yes, he and Kennedy pulled their punches.
But neither rigged this horrible thing and the smears that continued were not their making.
No response will be satisfactory for Hill.
She continues to lay all responsibility for the hearing and its aftermath at Biden's feet. She looked for the chairmans protection against her lying perverted harasser and her women hating craven attackers.
She did not get it. Neither did Blasely.
Maybe hearings are not the answer.
How bout a thorough vetting before a nominee goes forward? Polygraph, psych testing and interview, total investigation of finances, relationships, past, character...if you apply to be a Federal Marshall, you will be subjects to months of background checking.
Personally, I dont believe the fiasco was caused or furthered by Biden.
He is the face on a flawed and ugly process, but should not be the face of it. He has praised her, reviewed his part, explained the process, but since he did not vote for Thomas, was not her attack dog, he should not apologize for those who were. At this point damned if he blames them and Thomas, damned if he makes a thousand apologies.
If it is a deal breaker for you as a voter, then it is. We need to move on and make a much better process by which any one with the power of the SC is chosen.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
