Democratic Primaries
In reply to the discussion: Which play it safe candidate has gone on to win the GE? [View all]marylandblue
(12,344 posts)41. Almost by definition, every democracy is a centrist country.
To get the majority vote, you can't go too far off from what most people think. Sometimes there are major shifts. In 1932, people shifted left and elected FDR. In 1980, they were ready for a shift right and voted for Reagan. At this time I believe we are poised for a shift back to the left.
Both of those shifts were preceded by economic instability. We are going through economic instability right now, but it's hidden because our usual measures - GDP and unemployment rate are not capturing it. Now it's about income inequality. The economy is growing, but the gains mostly go to the top.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

Ok. Gotcha. And I fully agree with your point that the establishment Democratic choice loses.

And what does "mainstream establishment" mean? Career politician? Government employee?

Most of them lost to incumbents with greater than 50% approval ratings.

We were coming out of a major recession and GDP grew by 4.6% in 83 and 7.2% in 1984.

Exactly. Respectfully, that's why the comparison to Reagan falls apart.

Sure, but Biden backers have also dismissed every argument based on Trump being unique
