They just keep stroking him and telling him he's great. That gets them individually what they want because otherwise they'd be cut off from his good graces and possibly worse. Unfortunately, his alcoholic personality (Wiles was spot on about this) combined with his dementia makes him erratic, irritable, unreasonable, vindictive and generally not nice to live with.

This is all really, really bad for the rest of us and democracy writ large.
