Schmidt's "brilliant" analysis was instrumental in bringing Sarah Palin to national politics, and he can never be let off the hook for that. Even so, what he's saying here is likely pretty good advice.
At least, it is a lot better than Schumer's and Jeffries's preemptive surrender tactic.
