You do realize how much the kids would love President Biden if he adopted a bear?

(5,810 posts)and the doors were left open. A tiny black kitten jumped in and the shop owner asked my mom if she wanted the kitty. She said yes and we had her until 1979. She was sleek and petite, a delicate girl. I still miss her. She was a beauty. No one should be afraid or superstitious about black cats. They are gorgeous. Mama Sita had beautiful green eyes and a tiny white spot on her chest.

(4,554 posts)is the silly superstition about black cats still a factor in adoptions? What about broken mirrors and spilled salt??

(34,062 posts)The uniform black isn't friendly to cameras. See Inky. I finally got a picture I like (the face picture) - the lighting was right to get enough variation to show his features. But the sink picture is more typical - it's cute because he's in the sink - but is hard to distinguish one part of his body from another.

I was warned at one point to be sure to bring in our black kitty overnight on Halloween because there are a few human monsters in this world.

(21,431 posts)a bit of humor when I named my solid black shelter cat Merlin. He was an indoor cat, but was also an escape artist who slipped out to explore whenever he could. For his own protection I made sure he was safely kept away from doors and windows around Halloween.
Merlin was quite a character who did not like being held or snuggled. He loved being an independent, mischief making bad boy by day. But, I often sleep on my stomach and would wake up in the morning to find that he had curled up on the middle of my back so quietly while I slept that I never noticed until waking up.

(15,805 posts)First was Rasputin, named for his horribly matted fur on his first day when he ran into the house and went from being feral to a pampered house cat. He lived to be 17.
Then we adopted Cash, from the singer by the same name known as the Man in Black. He was the most mellow fellow. He crossed the rainbow Bridge in his sleep at age 13.
The last black cat was adopted from a box of kittens outside a grocery store. We named her Pepper, she had stray white hairs mixed randomly throughout her short coat. She developed cancer and we let her go in peace when she was only 8.
No black cats since, but by coincidence we have two unrelated lynx marked cats that don't purr. I miss purring. I don't know why these two can't purr, but there's not even a vibration. They will be our last pets.

(21,130 posts)We named him panther. I tried to make him a house cat but he wouldnt have none of it. I would go on my back deck call his name and by time I got to my front door hed be walking up the street. He liked to hang around walking between my legs when I cooked dinner at night. Then he stopped eating and didnt want to go out and died days later. I had him for two years. I think he was poisoned by this vindictive neighbor I had. But I grew to love that little black cat. A few days after he died I swear I could feel him walking between my legs when I cooked dinner.
Welcome Winston Biden!

(34,062 posts)He is a (formerly) feral cat who lost his cat family in a car accident. Someone who lived on the road trapped him, gave him to someone else who said they wanted him - but they changed their mind. Our vet's husband said, "My wife will take him!" He does not have good sense about his wife's emotional needs - which, at that point, was not to yet another stray cat dumped on her vet clinic. My spouse wandered in (she does that occasionally just to chat) - and our vet pawned him off on us, since my spouse melted when he looked just like her childhood cat - named Inky.
(Unfortunately, the new Inky does not like my spouse. She does not read cat-speak well - she means to be kind to him, and really wants him to be her cat. But his preference is to be petted much more gently and slowly than she pets him. He tolerates our daughter. He adores me. So I guess I belong to this black cat. All of the 8 cats who've owned us over the 39+ years of our marriage have been rescue cats.)

(6,547 posts)I have 4 black, semi-feral cats that I feed and take care of. Two of the kittens have those bright green irridescent eyes. The Mom cat (BG) has green eyes, but not as bright as her kittens. I presently have 9 semi-ferals wintering in my garage. There is a large insulated dog house in there that they love. I have been trying to live trap the mom, but she avoids the trap completely. I really want to have her spayed. She has been wintering with me for 5 years.

(34,136 posts)Sabra's eyes are golder.
Sabra was adopted from the local Humane Society. Aside from the black cat stigma, she was very traumatized. AS a kitten she was rescued from a wheel well - I don't know the full story - that's what they had on the Humane Society site. She was adopted but then returned. The people didn't even tell the Humane Society why, they just stuffed her in a box and left her at the door. Whatever happened to her, she was severely traumatized. She was at their cat cafe but would not come from under the furniture.
I read her story and liked her looks so I brought her home to be a friend to the other cat we had adopted from the Humane Society, Maya. Maya was not afraid, just aloof and would not let people pet her.
Sabra spent the first three weeks here under the bed. We never saw her, except for a tail retreating, but she was eating, drinking, and pooping so we knew she was OK. With a lot of patience she is finally coming out into the rest of the house. She loves the screen porch (our catio) and plays with the other two kitties, Maya and Lucas.

We are very lucky they are in our lives.

(12,463 posts)Up was a black cat.
Only 7 cats I have had
In my life were other colors.
Bear was white
Sparkle was lavender lynxpoint
Huzza was pink(he was really a pink cat with grey stripes) and his brother a paradactal who was red tabby and white.
Bigfoot brown tabby
Rustle a cream tabby
And Othello is black and white.
I have had too many black cats in my life to write out all thier names here but I adore every cat I had the privilege to know. And all were rescues.
Except one, she was the sweetest black cat named Frika. Stole her from abusive owners that left human teeth mark scars all over her precious ears. She had kidney damage and had seizures because of the damage the abuse those terrible people did to her.
