It's a terrible tragedy. Hawaii is very good with natural disasters. But, the tendency to place blame here is not merited. Sad truth - no one planned for an instant and devastating fire. How can you see it coming? It was a series of unprecedented events that transpired.
Hawaiians are robust and proud. They will build back better. But, the historical loss is huge and unrecoverable.

(9,148 posts)implement a power line shut down. That could have gone a long way to preventing such a horrific and fast-moving firestorm. More municipalities need to get protocols in place to do these shut downs in certain conditions.

(6,655 posts)there were three fires: Upcountry (1000+ acres), Pulehu/Kihei (900+? acres) and Lahaina (2200+ acres). The hurricane force winds kept rapidly advancing all of the fires and prevented the helicopters from dropping water, so the fire fighters had a hard time keeping up.
The other contributing factor is that Maui (and most of Hawaii) has experienced drought conditions for the past several months and the former sugar cane fields are covered with highly inflammable dry grass. Perfect storm...

(1,749 posts)I love Makawao! I lived in Hanawana, mile marker 5 on the Hana Hwy. spent a lot of time at Casanovas and Pollis.
This news has deeply saddened me. So glad you were spared, I hope you can get some rain to help with the fires, but I know that lightning can cause a lot of the wildfires.
Have an espresso at Casanovas for me. 🤙🏻

(113,965 posts)when you can. This fire was so reminiscent of the hurricane-strength winds that caused the nearby Marshall Fire between Boulder and Denver except the Maui fire was far more deadly. The former emphasized to me that wildfire can become explosive everywhere, given the Marshall fire started as no more than a grass fire. Few places could not become at risk.

(60,186 posts)But some up the Kohala coast lost their houses, and one who didn't lose the entire house did get her roof blown off. The one in South Kona was unaffected as fare as we have heard. My daughter's school is apparently OK, which is important, since the eldest son of her partner just arrived there to start his high school year abroad. My daughter graduated there in 2003.

(3,132 posts)on my way to Boston from the Philippines.
We stayed a few days at Waikiki beach. We are now exiting to Boston. I'm actually at the airport awaiting our boarding.
When arriving, the airport was crowded with relief supplies going from Honolulu to Maui. But my stay here was great. Perfect weather, but a heavy heart for the losses in the neighboring island.
We planned out this trip 3 months ago as we need to attend a family wedding in Boston on Sunday.

(14,272 posts)Most of our towns are filled with old wood buildings not up to code and many areas in the state have been experiencing dry weather. Our emergency response needs to improve. Wind gusts are normal here (trade winds), but hurricanes and tropical storms down trees onto power lines. There are smokers who toss their cigarettes before they go back inside, too, because they can't smoke inside.
We need to prepare because we have nowhere to go out in the middle of the Pacific.

(9 posts)The annihilation of Lahaina was complete. The fire was so hot it melted water pipes, reducing or eliminating water available for fire fighters. Downed power lines were everywhere and were live. There was no cell service and near hurricane force winds to make it spread. Yesterday we drove to Upcountry and crews were still fighting the last tenacious hot spots.

(13,003 posts)more and more of these "types" of fires. They are classified a "Conflagration" by the fire services.......Rare until the past few years.
We here in Colorado have faced several of these in recent years. Thankfully few, if any people lost their lives in those fires.....
One of those fires, two? years ago covered 34 Square miles OVERNIGHT IN ONLY 12 HOURS. It went thru a town, over the continental divide, down the other side and was headed for another town when finally the winds settled down...
Another, last year took out a large area between Denver and Boulder, I can't recall how many homes burnt to the ground, again in like 12 hours, but it was something like 500-1000 homes......
This climate change is causing these immense wildfires around the world.....Look at California these past years, as well as massive fires in Alaska, and parts of Europe.......
Katie Bar the Door.........
I personally believe that Mother Nature is finally getting pissed at the way we are treating HER planet........
Hurricanes, Droughts, Wildfires, Flooding, droughts, volcanoes, Earthquakes, etc etc etc.......
