BREAKING: New AP poll reveals 57% of Americans think Trump should withdraw from the presidential race.
Don't expect to see that in the media. 🤷
End snip
Think. Again.

(28,836 posts)Not quite the story the author wants to tell, I suspect.
It's disconcerting that the effort to pressure President Biden out of the race has gained such traction. I wonder what fraction of that 70%/65% already wanted him out of the race prior to the debate.

(18,604 posts)If this argument started in January... might be a different story.

(28,836 posts)My point was that intentionally misleading information is not helpful, regardless of the source. I fully support Biden remaining in the race. I might have been more open to alternatives if any of them were undeniably better (and the president was amenable to the change), but there's no indication that any of them would be better at all.

(96,043 posts)Most all Democrats who, polled like this, indicate they would prefer Mr. Biden step aside, do so for fear he might not prevail over Trump. If he is the nominee, they will still vote for him to defeat Trump.
A portion of the Republicans who, polled like this, indicate they would prefer Trump step aside, do so out of objection to their party's standard being born by a felon held liable for rape and massive fraud, and who intends the overthrow of our country's democratic order. Not all of them will vote for that sick fuck come November.

(4,039 posts)The 27% of the Repubs who say he should not run will hopefully go with Joe or leave it blank -- both if which greatly hurt TFG since Rethug loyalty of their 25% of the voters has been an assumed strength compared to the volatility of the Democratic coalition.
That the majority of the independents think that he should not run -- that is very bad news for TFG and the entire Rethug party.
I wonder how many of the Dems want TFG to run because they think he is more beatable than a less crazy sounding fascist like Haley.
If this holds -- especially if they hold evidentiary hearings for the DC case in October to determine if the Jan 6 actions were "official acts" it will tip even further towards a blue avalanche.

(28,836 posts)The author only provided half of the story. The other half is decidedly not good news.

(10,960 posts)Those are . . . some numbers . . .
Real hard to make that "elites!" stuff stuck with that.
I support Biden remaining. I just wish the situation didn't look . . . as it does.
BlueCheeseAgain
(1,983 posts)Those numbers have been like that for a year, maybe more. The idea that it's "elites" vs the people is wrong. If anything, the "elites" stayed loyal despite what the polls have been saying for a long time.
Sympthsical
(10,960 posts)These numbers have been in this ballpark for ages. They've gotten a bit worse of late, but they're not exactly running against the grain of believable Democratic voter sentiment. But hey, we didn't have a competitive primary despite that. It is what it is.
But we've all known it. When I saw that "Elites!" talking point, it was just . . . who believes this? Who's buying it? Why say such a demonstrably untrue thing that could be disproved just by talking to anyone on the street? Anyone. Pick an-y-one.
I think I'm just academically interested at this point. What happens when a minority rejects all evidence, cloisters together to reassure one another, and convinces themselves of things demonstrably untrue by every metric and rubric?
The much-vaunted base is speaking. They have been. And some Democratic politicians have been listening. It's an extremely devoted minority within our own base that are actually bucking what is, at this point in time, fairly widespread sentiment among our voters.
I just think it's all too late now.

In the realm of politics, I think the academically accepted term is "They get their asses handed to them when the votes are counted".

(1,459 posts)I was one of many that really wanted new candidates this year, but now that we are in the homestretch we have to be 100% behind Biden.
My biggest concern is that there are no more stumbles before the election. Biden has been a strong leader before and since the debate, so Im confident we have our candidate!

But "Don't expect to see that in the media"?
Genius: Cite the media, post it on media, then say the media won't report what you cited.
Of course, the context is that the story leads with 65 percent of Dems want Biden to withdraw, which is a much larger number than the 57 percent of all voters who want the Lard of Mierda Loco to withdraw.

(13,003 posts)I fully expect the Republican Party is going to get Trump out of office some how, in some respectable way, so his new VP choice will become President.
They will continue with everything, but want a more stable, and less psychotic, less narcissistic person to enact the plans they have already outlined. Trump will have outgrown his usefulness, and the NEW Republican Party will kick him to the curb in some way that his 70 million voters will be totally enamored with the new VP as President.......

(1,750 posts)And I want everyone in my life to be younger sometimes. But that is not a reality. Yes, I want a younger candidate but don't want younger assholes? Dems had a chance to elect Sen Corey Brooks. They did not. So, now, you want younger person. You did not do that. Shut up wanting younger crowds.

(1,983 posts)But posting the other number in a separate OP (same question as applied to Biden) gets the OP removed, despite 100+ posts and a healthy discussion going on? If the 57% number is valid, then the other one must be too, right?
How are we supposed to have a healthy discussion if we're not allowed to present facts?

Even the most right wing trash can see that Trump is unfit for any office and may not like Biden but will vote against Trump as the greater evil.
Add in the issue of abortion rights and Biden will be elected easily.
