(12,655 posts)By mispronouncing Kamala and using Democrat Party instead of Democratic Party. Laughing at their ignorance is the best response

(4,103 posts)Who is "honestly confused?" Why would her name be difficult to pronounce? All one needs to do is hear it once, and who has not heard it at least once?
The only people confused are those listening to right wing media where the talking heads and Republican politicians are intentionally mispronouncing her name to make her seem alien so as to appeal to bigots.
It is not just a matter of mispronunciation. The context is usually derisive, and the speaker is openly mocking her name. That is a cowardly and dishonest way to mock and dismiss her.

(4,103 posts)Who has not heard Harris herself, or her aides and associates say her name multiple times?
I didn't say that every mispronunciations of her name is intended to be malicious. For one thing, it is difficult to divine what another person's intentions are. That is a dodge often used by racists - "prove that I am a racist!" In other words they are asking us to divine what their intentions were when they made a racist comment. That is an impossible task, of course.
I am saying that the introduction and the reinforcement of the confusion, by continual intentional mispronunciation of her name by right wingers is malicious. Repeating that, or promoting the idea that there is a legitimate basis for confusion may not be malicious. It could just be laziness and/or ignorance.

(28,836 posts)Anyone who doesn't watch TV/streaming or get news in video form or hasn't watched coverage of her speeches, etc. (It's a badge of honor for some here to inform everyone that they don't have a TV.) There are also a lot of people who are apolitical and/or aren't paying much attention to the race yet. Not everyone is as tuned in as some of us are here.
There must be some people who have never heard anyone say "Kamala."

(26,314 posts)I learned from both Han and Leia that the only pronunciation of a person's name that counts is the one they use and that everyone else's "interpretation" ranges between irrelevant and intentionally insulting be they friend or foe.

This native Californian has been struggling with it. California media reporters have been calling her "Kamela" with a long A (like Pamela) since her SF DA days, through her California Attorney General days, and ever when she was in the Senate.
It wasn't until she landed on Joe Biden's ticket did the California media start calling her Kamala, like comma-la.
