(774 posts)Bernie was on fire! Finally, somebody's giving us hope during these seemingly hopeless times.

(10,328 posts)...and one of the five blue countries in Iowa.
It begs the question: if his brand of progressivism is supposed to be so popular with even rightwingers, why is he sticking to the bluest of areas instead of doing these town halls in the red areas?
Emile
(42,183 posts)the people are.
W_HAMILTON
(10,328 posts)Because that's not where the majority of the people are, but it is where the majority of blue voters that we've already won over is.
Might as well be honest. It's not some grand attempt at winning over purple and red voters -- it's just a regular 'ole campaign event that a lot of politicians are having right now.

(42,183 posts)The wide open spaces have people, but they are spread far apart. You want him out in a very rural area talking to a small handful of people. Those people will travel to see him.
W_HAMILTON
(10,328 posts)Then, once again, certain segments of the left should stop with the notion that their policies are just so popular with conservatives and moderates and the real fault lies with the dastardly DNC for keeping these super popular progressive politicians that could easily get elected off the ballot.
I say that as a progressive myself, but one that has never been deluded into actually thinking rightwingers want the politicians and policies they instinctively hate the most. They don't, which is why the most forceful progressives all hail from the bluest of blue areas and when they do travel outside of that bubble, they stick to the bluest areas of wherever they are campaigning.

It's been almost a decade, time to face reality and give up these myths proven wrong.
W_HAMILTON
(10,328 posts)...when it looked for a short time there that he might actually win the Democratic nomination.
Spoiler alert: the only reason they supported Sanders was because they believed he would be useful in taking down Hillary by driving a wedge between those on the left -- and they were right.
If so many rightwingers were clamoring for progressive policies, you think -- instead of them all being from the bluest of blue areas -- you could find one or two Sanders/AOC-style elected politicians from red areas, eh?

(29,048 posts)The Our Revolution, Brand New Congress, Justice Democrats plan to take over the Democratic Party, run their own candidates and easily win general elections in swing or red states failed miserably. Not one was elected in red areas.

(3,793 posts)I dare anyone to go to WalMart, stop ten people at random and ask them what OLIGARCHY is.
THEY DO NOT KNOW AND DONT CARE!
And thats the problem with Democrats - we dont speak the same language as voters.
WHY NOT CALL IT STOP THE DICTATORSHIP tour? Use words that people understand.
But WTF do I know about it?

(774 posts)He spelled it out, plain as day, and didn't just use the word oligarchy.

(1,107 posts)I agree with the other poster - we need to do a better job of communicating with everyday working people. Why put that particular word on the lectern? Or use words like "kleptocracy"? I had to go look that one up.
I loved Bernie's speech, he is heads above any other American Progressive. But not everyone has had a political science course.
While it was great, Bernie's speech was essentially another eloquent re-stating of the horrific facts of the day. I didn't hear any concrete plans or strategy about how we were going to fight back against authoritarianism, oligarchy or kleptocracy, whatever you want to call it. It was basically a pep rally, and while we need those - we are going to need more that to defeat the Fascist Right here in the USA.
Does anyone here remember what it took to end the Vietnam War? That took thousands of demonstrations, hundreds of shutdowns of college campuses, thousands of heads getting cracked by batons and 4 protestors dead on the ground in Ohio before that war came to an end.
Does anyone really think that nice speeches and a bunch of words posted on some Internet message board are going to turn the tide of the Authoritarian Right? We need ACTIVISM and I don't see it happening.

(761 posts)The corporatocracy, the theocracy, etc. But I agree with others in the thread, we need to come up with some terminology that resonates with people. "Eat the rich" type thing. And i think we need our firebrands out front on this. Give me more Bernie, more AOC, more jasmine Crockett, Liz Warren, et al. I don't need to hear what gerry Connolly and dick durbin have to say about the big corporations. So sue me.

(1,107 posts)But it is going to take more than flapping lips, hot air and good typing skills to hit the Authoritarian Right where it hurts.
Where does it hurt? In their WALLET. The roughly 50% in this country that understand exactly where Trump is going to take us need to SHUT THIS FUCKING COUNTRY DOWN. Fill the streets with demonstrators in every city, disrupt commerce by boycott, use disinformation against the rightwing scum - in other words, exert the power of the people.
