Trump DOJ is looking at ways to ban transgender Americans from owning guns, sources say

In the wake of the Minneapolis Catholic church shooting, senior Justice Department officials are weighing proposals to limit transgender people’s right to possess firearms, according to two officials familiar with the internal discussions.

The talks, described as preliminary in nature, appear to build on an idea that has gained some currency in conservative media since the Minneapolis shooting that killed two children and injured 21, most of them children, at Annunciation Catholic Church, an attack that police say was carried out by a 23-year-old transgender woman.

Such a move would represent a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s fight against the rights of transgender Americans.

3. So, if the purported reason for preventing trans people from owning guns

is that they are mentally ill, why is it that the GOP has consistently opposed restrictions on mentally ill people owning guns? In his first term Trump signed GOP-sponsored legislation that rolled back an Obama rule that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to buy guns. Currently, federal law prohibits gun ownership only if a person has been formally adjudicated mentally ill. Would that also apply to trans people, or are they to be presumptively considered mentally ill?

BTW, The U.S. Secret Service National Threat Association Center has reported that from 2016 to 2020, 96% of the shooters were men, 3% were women, and 2% were transgender.
