McCarthy formally blocks Schiff, Swalwell from Intel panel
Source: The Hill
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday formally rejected two Democrats Reps. Adam Schiff (Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (Calif.) from serving on the Intelligence Committee, escalating the two-year, tit-for-tat battle between the parties over who is qualified for certain positions on Capitol Hill.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) had written to McCarthy on Saturday asking that both Schiff and Swalwell be seated on the Intel panel, where membership assignments come solely at the discretion of the Speaker.
McCarthy rejected the request, saying Schiff and Swalwells previous actions make them unfit to serve on a panel with jurisdiction over and access to sensitive issues of national security.
In order to maintain a standard worthy of this committees responsibilities, I am hereby rejecting the appointments of Representative Adam Schiff and Representative Eric Swalwell to serve on the Intelligence Committee, he wrote in a letter to Jeffries.

Jeffries submits Schiff, Swalwell for Intel panel, forcing fight with McCarthy
Source: The Hill
The head of House Democrats has submitted Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) to sit on the powerful Intelligence Committee, setting up a battle with Republican leaders who are vowing to keep them off the panel.
Separately, Democrats this week are also expected to seat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, according to a source familiar with the Democrats plans, which will likely prompt GOP leaders to hold a floor vote to remove her.
In a letter sent Saturday to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Schiff, the top Democrat on the Intelligence panel, and Swalwell are both eminently qualified to continue their service on the committee. Jeffries requested that McCarthy seat them there.
Together, these Members have over two decades of distinguished leadership providing oversight of our nations Intelligence Community, in addition to their prosecutorial work in law enforcement prior to serving in Congress, Jeffries wrote.

Democrats see Mississippi governor's race as ripe for an upset
The HillDemocrats in Mississippi are feeling optimistic that their party will be able to oust Gov. Tate Reeves (R) from the governors mansion this fall after Democrat Brandon Presleys recent entry in the race.
Reeves has suffered from low approval ratings and has been name-checked at times in the states long-running welfare scandal, but the governorship has proved elusive for Democrats in the red state for decades.
The party believes this time will be different. They say Presley, the states northern district public service commissioner and a distant relative of Elvis Presley, has an ability to connect with rural voters and that hes proven he can win elections in some of the reddest parts of the state.
There is not a better retail politician in the state of Mississippi, period. He knows how to connect with voters. He knows how to listen to voters, which I think is an underrated skill in a politician, said Democratic strategist Brannon Miller, whose firm has worked with Presleys campaign previously but is not involved in the gubernatorial race at this time.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown hires campaign manager as he gears up for 2024 reelection contest
Cleveland Plain DealerCOLUMBUS, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown has hired a former communications aide to manage his 2024 reelection campaign, a major formal step toward preparing for whats expected to be one of the countrys most closely watched Senate races.
Rachel Petri, who served as a media spokesperson for Browns successful 2018 reelection campaign, will be Browns campaign manager for next years race, Brown announced. Petri most recently worked as deputy campaign manager for U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnocks hotly contested reelection campaign in Georgia last year.
Petri also previously worked in Browns official Senate office, and is a St. Clairsville native and Miami University alum.
Rachel is a daughter of eastern Ohio who understands the Dignity of Work and knows what it takes to win tough races, including in Ohio, Brown said in a statement. Rachel has spent her entire career fighting for working families and this race will be no different. Connie and I are confident that under Rachels leadership well show voters were on their side and win next November.

How the White House plans to target 18 House Republicans from districts Biden won
CNNIn parts of the West Wing and Capitol Hill, theyre known as The 18 the 18 House Republicans elected in districts where voters supported President Joe Biden over Donald Trump. His aides are putting together plans to squeeze and shame them in the hopes of peeling off a few key votes over the next two years.
To the president and House Democratic leaders, they are the path back to the majority in 2024, and maybe even to some actual governing in between. Democrats are already making plans to pressure these Republicans to break with their party and let their Biden-supporting voters back home know about it if and when they dont.
The 18 themselves are not so convinced.
Arent they going to work to get us to lose next November no matter what? scoffed a skeptical New York Rep. Mike Lawler, the freshman who beat a five-term incumbent in one of the countrys most Biden-leaning district that is currently represented by a Republican. Bipartisanship and compromise does not mean just me and a bunch of Republicans in Biden districts just acquiescing to the White House. They need to understand they need to come to the table as much as we do.
