Trump's growing GOP challengers revive fears of 2016 repeat

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Memories of the tumultuous 2016 Republican primary hung over the Las Vegas ballroom this weekend during the first major gathering of the party’s potential contenders for the 2024 nomination.

No fewer than 10 White House prospects stepped onto the stage to pitch their plans to fix the nation — and their party. The details varied, but within most speeches was an extraordinary sense of defiance rarely seen since former President Donald Trump seized control of the Republican Party six years ago.

Their central message: Trump can and should be beaten.

Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, pledged in April that she wouldn’t challenge the former president if he ran again. But Saturday night, facing hundreds of cheering Republicans, she vowed to give “1,000%” to a White House bid if she decided to get in.

Jeffries on leadership transition: 'Honor to stand on the shoulders'

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y), widely expected to lead his caucus in the next Congress, said Sunday it was an honor to follow the previous generation of top Democrats.

“It’s an honor to stand on the shoulders of such an extraordinary group of leaders: Jim Clyburn, Steny Hoyer and, of course, Nancy Pelosi,” Jeffries said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” referring to the outgoing House majority whip, House majority leader and speaker of the House, respectively.

The trio of octogenarians announced last week they plan to leave the top positions, paving the way for a generational change in party leadership. Jeffries announced his plans to run for House Democratic leader on Friday, and was running unopposed as of Sunday.

Jeffries said that while outsiders have “to create this frame of Democrats in disarray,” his party was able to come together on crucial policy decisions.

Warnock expands ground game to try to ensure turnout in Georgia Senate runoff

ABC News

Sen. Raphael Warnock's campaign is expanding its field organizing program, offering a look into the areas his team is focusing on ahead of the Dec. 6 runoff against Republican Herschel Walker.

As Georgia's Senate candidates look to drive turnout ahead of the state's shortened runoff cycle, Warnock has added roughly 300 paid staffers and new offices across the state to his voter contact program, his campaign said -- increasing the direct voter contact programs to 18 counties and 19 offices across the state, and more than 900 paid staffers, according to details shared first with ABC News.

Campaign officials claimed the added investments and staff capacity would allow the campaign to knock on more doors during the four-week runoff than in the 16 weeks leading up to the general election, in which Warnock narrowly beat out Walker but failed to crack the 50% threshold required to win.

The voter contact program will be placed in priority counties for the Warnock campaign: Bibb, Chatham, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Columbia, DeKalb, Dougherty, Douglas, Floyd, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Lowndes, Muscogee, Newton, Richmond and Rockdale.

U.S. eyes shifts on climate payments, in possible breakthrough at summit

Source: Politico

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — The struggle to reach a new global agreement on climate change took a significant turn as the United States showed openness to making payments to nations suffering irreversible damage from the planet’s warming, negotiators at the U.N. summit here told POLITICO.

The U.S. helped draft a proposal that calls for supplying such payments to developing countries, U.K. and European officials said late Friday night as text of a potential agreement circulated to reporters in this town on the Red Sea. Negotiations in the nearly two-week-long summit are continuing Saturday, a day after the original deadline.

Many details of the plan would still need to be worked out, including the exact mix of public and private funding that could go into a pot of money meant to help countries cope with the losses inflicted by climate change.

The proposal may still fail to satisfy critics from developing countries who say the U.S. is continuing to shirk its responsibility for all the greenhouse gases it has pumped into the atmosphere since the 19th century. Another potential sticking point is the U.S. insistence that China — now the world’s top carbon polluter — must be among the countries opening their wallets.

Anti-abortion groups seek to overturn FDA approval of abortion pill

Source: Politico

A group of anti-abortion organizations sued HHS and the FDA on Friday in a bid to reverse the FDA’s approval of the abortion medication mifepristone.

Lawyers from the conservative Christian legal group Alliance Defending Freedom filed the suit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in Amarillo on behalf of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Pediatricians, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations and four doctors.

The FDA declined to comment on the litigation. An HHS spokesperson defended the medication as safe and effective and said that “denying women access to any essential care they need is downright dangerous and extreme.”

The case: The ADF’s lawyers argue that the FDA went beyond its authority in approving the medication 22 years ago.

As Republicans worry, Democrats welcome Trump's shadow in Ga. Senate runoff

Washington Post

McDONOUGH, Ga. — Connie Beal is still a fan of former president Donald Trump, but she’d rather he keep his distance from the Peach State during the runoff battle between Republican Herschel Walker and Sen. Raphael G. Warnock (D).

Beal, a retired teacher from Jonesboro, and other supporters who attended a Walker rally Wednesday said they don’t think Trump, who on Tuesday announced his 2024 bid for president — and gave a shout-out to Walker — would help the Senate candidate, who was the only Republican on the statewide ticket who didn’t win in last week’s general election.

“I don’t think he has it in the bag,” she said, referring to Walker. “It’ll be close.”

Walker finished about 35,000 votes behind Warnock, who fell short of the 50 percent of the vote required to win outright under Georgia law. The two will face off once again on Dec. 6, setting off a frenzied round of rallies, attack ads and endorsements as both parties try to capture the last outstanding Senate seat from the 2022 midterms.
