As others stand at attention for anthem, Trump fidgets, points, pretend-conducts the band

Source: Miami Herald

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said all Americans should “stand proudly” during the national anthem, and publicly chastises those who don’t as disrespectful of the troops.

But during the national anthem at his own Super Bowl watch party Sunday night, a brief video posted to Instagram shows Trump greeting guests, adjusting his chair, and straightening his suit jacket as other attendees — including first lady Melania Trump and their teenage son — stand with their hands over their hearts. As “The Star Spangled Banner” crescendoes, Trump raises both of his hands in the air, and twirls them around as if conducting the music.

The video was included in an Instagram story by a real estate agent for a Russian-American firm who frequents Mar-a-Lago and other Trump properties and events.

Trump entered his party at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach as Demi Lovato was introduced to sing the national anthem at Hard Rock Stadium, videos of the moment show. It’s unclear from the video of Trump “conducting” whether the anthem you hear is Lovato, projected on screens around the room, or if a live performer is singing at the club. (The video appears flipped, or mirrored, likely because it is an Instagram video recorded with a phone’s selfie camera.)

Klobuchar: 'No scenario where I don't go on' to New Hampshire

Politico

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said Monday that there is “no scenario” where her campaign does not continue on to New Hampshire's primary contest next week, regardless of where she finishes in Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

“There's no scenario where I don't go on,” she said in an interview Monday morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Klobuchar cited endorsements she’s racked up in New Hampshire, the first primary state, which include members of the state legislature’s leadership as well as the editorial boards of the three biggest newspapers in the state.

Klobuchar has consistently polled behind the fluid top tier of Democrats in the crowded primary field, but nevertheless has slowly risen in the polls in recent months as primary season drew closer and as the Democratic field winnowed. The Minnesota senator has repeatedly touted her electability relative to other 2020 Democrats, casting herself as a pragmatic, moderate choice. The New York Times, which co-endorsed Klobuchar and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), cited those factors in its endorsement of the Minnesota lawmaker.

“We have this incredible operation,” Klobuchar said of her prospects in the early states of Iowa and New Hampshire, arguing that the strength of her campaign has allowed her to absorb the blow of being off the campaign trail and back in Washington for President Donald Trump's impeachment trial over the last month.

Rush Limbaugh announces he has advanced lung cancer

Source: New York Daily News

Rush Limbaugh, the loudmouthed conservative radio host, announced on his show Monday that he has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.

The 69-year-old “The Rush Limbaugh Host” said he has begun treatment for the cancer, but didn’t go into details.

“There are going to be days that I’m not going to be able to be here,” he said on the show.

Limbaugh launched his career as a DJ on a Pennsylvania radio station in 1971 and continued moving up the food chain, including joining New York’s WABC in 1988, just before the Republican National Convention.

Iowa Precinct Chairs Report Issues Using Caucus App, Potentially Delaying Results

Bloomberg

Precinct chairs across Iowa said that some of them are struggling to use the new phone application for reporting Monday night’s caucus results, potentially delaying the counting of the first votes in the 2020 Democratic race.

The application is one of the ways local officials who oversee individual caucuses are able to send results from each of the nearly 1,700 sites to the Iowa Democratic Party, which compiles and checks the results.

The app was created to improve the efficiency of reporting of results, but chairs unable to use the app on Monday will send their results to the party via a call-in number. The party hotline has always been available to precinct chairs. State party officials said they have no concerns that the results will be counted inaccurately.

The final tally could be delayed by a few hours because the chairs will have to call the hotline and read the results instead of submitting them electronically.

Iowa secretary of State disputes viral misinformation about voter registration

Source: The Hill

Iowa's Republican secretary of State is disputing a viral claim from a Washington, D.C.-based conservative group, attempting to knee-cap the spread of election-related misinformation ahead of the Iowa caucus on Monday night.

In a press release, Secretary of State Paul Pate said the group, Judicial Watch, is feeding a "misinformation campaign" as its leaders and followers continue to spread a debunked report that alleges eight Iowa counties have total registration rates larger than their eligible voting population.

"It’s unfortunate this organization continues to put out inaccurate data regarding voter registration, and it’s especially disconcerting they chose the day of the Iowa Caucus to do this,” Pate said in a statement.

"My office has told this organization, and others who have made similar claims, that their data regarding Iowa is deeply flawed and their false claims erode voter confidence in elections," Pate added. "They should stop this misinformation campaign immediately and quit trying to disenfranchise Iowa voters."
