The geriatric Senate confronts a youth movement

Politico

Jon Ossoff broke the Senate’s generational barrier for millennials. His fellow 30-somethings want to make sure he isn’t alone for long.

Ossoff was 33 when, in January, he became the first senator of his generation and the youngest elected Democrat since Joe Biden in the 1970s. Now, at least a dozen candidates born after 1980 are either running for Senate or seriously considering launching campaigns for next year, a major surge in ambitious younger politicians.

They vary from political newcomers to statewide officials and members of Congress, and the list includes both Republicans and Democrats, in races from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to Ohio and Alabama.

The elections are a year and a half away, and barriers remain for the younger crop of candidates: Most face competitive primaries against either more established candidates or fellow up-and-comers, and some would face uphill general election battles if they win nominations. Several may opt against running.

Joe Biden cherry-picks audience to promote bipartisan infrastructure deal

Source: The Guardian

Joe Biden used a visit to a cherry farm in Michigan on Saturday to talk up his bipartisan infrastructure package and additional plans for investing in families and education. He also pitched his immigration plans when chatting with two couples from Guatemala who were picking cherries.

The Democratic governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, greeted Biden’s midday arrival in Traverse City, which is hosting the National Cherry Festival, an event that has attracted presidents in the past. As they toured the cherry farm in nearby Antrim county, Whitmer told reporters she had not spoken to Biden about any infrastructure projects for Michigan specifically.

“I’m the fix-the-damn-roads governor, so I talk infrastructure with everybody, including the president,” she said. In recent flooding, she said, the state saw “under-invested infrastructure collide with climate change”.

“So this is an important moment. And that’s why this infrastructure package is so important. That’s also why I got the president rocky road fudge from Mackinac Island for his trip here.”

Misinformation and the Jan. 6 insurrection: When 'patriot warriors' were fed lies

Politifact

PolitiFact reviewed court filings, news reports and other information for approximately 430 defendants arrested through June 1 on charges related to the insurrection. Many defendants saw their actions as patriotic, and the day as a turning point in American history. They believed they were on the frontlines of a new revolution or civil war.

In about half of the cases, the court documents shed light on how misinformed beliefs influenced the defendants’ lives ahead of the riot.

There was a music teacher in Washington, D.C., who amplified false conspiracy theories on his podcast and YouTube channel — that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting never happened, that former NBA star Kobe Bryant is still alive, that Earth is flat.

There was a 54-year-old woman from Pennsylvania who suggested on Facebook that people who "start researching" will find that Democrats "have been trafficking children for years," and who one witness said lost customers at the restaurant where she worked over her views on politics.

And there was a 32-year-old man from Ventura, Calif., who said in videos posted on YouTube and other platforms long before Jan. 6 that the Smithsonian Institution is hiding evidence of giants, and that we may be living in a simulation.

Crestview Towers condo in North Miami Beach evacuated due to unsafe conditions

Source: WSVI

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - The City of North Miami Beach has evacuated a condo building due to unsafe conditions.

The North Miami Beach Building Department ordered the evacuation of the Crestview Towers Condominium due to unsafe structural and electrical conditions.

The evacuation comes after the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo in Surfside and the subsequent push by South Florida municipalities ordering reviews of condominium high rise buildings.

The North Miami Beach Police Department is assisting the condo association with the safe and orderly evacuation of its residents. The City is also working with the American Red Cross to find temporary shelter for displaced residents who do not have somewhere else to stay.

So far, 20 people are confirmed to have died and 126 people are missing after the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo building.

Arizona GOP Pressured Officials to Stop Counting Votes

Source: Political Wire

New records obtained by the Arizona Republic reveal the behind-the scenes efforts by Donald Trump, his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, and state GOP Chair Kelli Ward to pressure the county supervisors, who make up the elected body that oversees elections in the state’s most populous county.

After Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman asked Arizona GOP Chair Kelli Ward to clarify what she meant when she asked for the “transparency of a human evaluation,” Ward replied: “We need you to stop the counting.”

uesday, July 6, 2021
12:00 PM EDT
Virtual Webinar (via Zoom)

In the wake of a presidency that ended with a violent insurrection in the U.S. Capitol, the Grand Old Party (G.O.P.) has faced a bitter internal division among its members. Some Republicans have raised concern at the party's embrace of former President Donald Trump and his continued claims that the 2020 election was “stolen.” There’s a strong coalition fighting to reclaim their party, while other party leaders are threatening to split from the party altogether and form their own party in opposition to President Trump.

What is Donald Trump’s hold on the party? Has Trump permanently reshaped the party in his image? How does the party move beyond the 2020 election and build a national coalition to compete in future elections? Join the United States Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC) and the John Brademas Center's Young Leaders Network for a panel discussion with former elected officials as they discuss the future of the Republican party.

This distinguished panel included The Hon. Jason Altmire, U.S. Congressman (D-PA, 2007-2013) The Hon. Tom Coleman, U.S. Congressman (R-MO, 1976-1993) The Hon. Barbara Comstock, U.S. Congresswoman (R-VA, 2015-2019) The Hon. Charlie Dent, U.S. Congressman (R-PA, 2005-2018) The Hon.
