N.J. coronavirus stay-at-home order lifted by Murphy as state reopening moves forward

Source: NJ.com

New Jersey is lifting the stay-at-home order put in place nearly three months ago to slow the spread of the coronavirus as the reopening plan nears Stage 2 with nonessential retail set to allow customers inside again next week, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Tuesday.

Murphy has cited continued progress with fewer numbers of newly infected people and deaths in recent weeks as the reason to lift unprecedented restrictions put in place. He issued the stay-at-home order March 21.

“With more and more of our businesses reopening, we are no longer requiring you to stay at home, but we are asking you to continue to be responsible and safe,” Murphy said at his regular COVID-19 briefing in Trenton Tuesday. “And, when you do go out, please continue to wear face coverings and keep a social distance from others, whenever possible."

At least 12,303 New Jerseyans have died and more than 164,700 have been infected since the first case was reported in the state on March 4.

NYPD cop who shoved protester hit with criminal charges

Source: Politico

NEW YORK — An NYPD officer seen on video shoving a young woman to the ground during a Brooklyn police brutality protest has been hit with criminal charges, the Brooklyn district attorney announced Tuesday.

The officer, Vincent D’Andraia, is charged with criminal mischief, harassment and menacing, said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Video shows the officer forcefully shove the young woman during a May 29 protest over the killing of George Floyd. She struck the pavement and went to the emergency room.

“I fully support the long-held American tradition of non-violent protest. As District Attorney I cannot tolerate the use of excessive force against anyone exercising this Constitutionally guaranteed right. This is especially true of those who are sworn to protect us and uphold the law,” Gonzalez said. ‘I am deeply troubled by this unnecessary assault. We will now seek to hold this defendant accountable.”

The cop is one of two officers who have been suspended without pay from the NYPD for their actions at protests. The other suspended officer was seen pulling down a protester’s mask to pepper spray him.

California says film and TV shoots can start June 12. But big changes are coming

Source: Los Angeles Times

California will allow film and television shoots to resume as soon as June 12, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said Friday, marking a major step toward reviving the entertainment business after the coronavirus outbreak crippled it nearly three months ago.

However, the restart of film, TV and music productions will be subject to the approval of county public health officers where the work will take place, the California Department of Public Health said in a brief statement.

Further, the future of daily life on Hollywood sets will not be the same when movies and TV productions start up again. Entertainment studios and labor unions this week agreed to a detailed set of production protocols that will make major changes to the way movie and TV sets operate, including the elimination of buffet-style meals and requirements to wipe down handheld props after each use.

“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations,” the department said. “To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers.”

More than half of states may be undercounting coronavirus cases by not following CDC guidelines

Source: CNN

At least 28 states are not following US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on reporting new Covid-19 cases -- half of which saw the trend of new cases increasing in the last week.

Those states are not reporting probable cases, according to the daily case count listed on the CDC's website. Probable cases include those that show evidence of an infection without the confirmation of a lab test and cases where coronavirus was listed as a cause or contributing cause of death but are not confirmed with a lab test.

Some of the states with the largest populations -- like California, Florida, New York and Texas -- are among those listed as not reporting probable cases, despite CDC guidance that they should be included in the case count.

This comes as 26 states see an increased or steady rate of new cases. Accurate rates of new cases are among the metrics that help officials track how the disease is spreading in the US and make decisions about how to reopen and loosen restrictions put in place to mitigate its impact.
