I absolutely agree with your line of thinking.

It's a shame it's gone this far, but if making laws about truth in news broadcasts is what it takes to muzzle the likes of Fox OANN, or at least call them out and make them own the lies for what they are, I'm all for the legislation to do it. Part of the problem is that because Fox is a cable channel not using public airwaves, it is not regulated by the FCC. Attempts to push back on their disinformation also run up against First Amendment protections of free speech. It's a frustrating situation that desperately needs to be dealt with.

I'm not the biggest Snopes fan, but they have a pretty good rundown on the situation here:

The reactions to this article (which include discussion of the Fairness Doctrine) are also illuminating:

Videos

I hear "I hope they die" once. There is one man repeating something in the beginning that I cannot make out. The rest is ugly trash talk, but no real chanting.

https://twitter.com/Nurse4Sail/status/1305159215561011200

Here are protesters NOT chanting #WeHopeTheyDie.
I heard one guy say "I hope they die." I think that's effed up BUT it's one guy & it sounds like the 'huge' group of protesters is 5 guys razzing the police AWAY form the entrance they supposedly blocked.

Here is another one. Same guys. I heard, "Suck my dick," and "I hope they die," but not a group chanting We hope they die. Again, I don't like this behavior AT ALL but where is the proof the sheriff stated stated they were chanting that?

Unfortunately, she's now running unopposed.

Kevin Van Ausdal was likely to lose anyway, but now there's no one to counter the looney tunes at all.

The real surprise is that he isn't just dropping out, he's leaving the state entirely.

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/516068-democrat-in-race-against-marjorie-taylor-greene-drops-out

In a statement, Kevin Van Ausdal attributed his decision to withdraw from the race to “family and personal reasons,” but did not elaborate on what had prompted him to end his campaign. [snip]

"The next steps in my life are taking me away from Georgia, so I will be disqualified from serving in Congress and will give the Party a chance to put forward a candidate that can carry this fight to the end.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that local activists were putting together a list of potential replacement candidates that included defense lawyer Bobby Lee Cook, a model for the long-running Andy Griffith series television series “Matlock.”

Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs, however, said the window had already closed on the time for Democrats to replace Van Ausdal.

Dems needed 60 days to replace him. He dropped out too late.

U.S. coronavirus deaths are projected to more than double to 410,000 by January.

Lindsey Graham is worried that if we have a Democratic president, we may gain Puerto Rico as a new state - if Puerto Rico wants to join us. It's partly up to them after all.

Nice to know your priorities, Senator. By the way, your lack of humanity is showing. Also, I don't think we'll be calling you Senator much longer. Good riddance.

Who took the money? Here's one explanation:

Trump's Administration Secretly Took Millions From FDNY's 9/11 Health Program - SEP 11, 2020
https://news.yahoo.com/sept-11-responders-funds-missing-trump-195711366.html

Only after Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) intervened and asked Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin about the matter was Prezant provided what he views as an unsatisfying answer. The feds were squabbling over Medicare bills with a different agency in New York City; for some reason, they decided to go after 9/11 emergency responders’ funds.

An initial rerouting of about $500,000 began in 2016, under the Obama administration. Under President Donald Trump, the withdrawals have accelerated.

It’s a surprising choice, especially given the high profile struggle of 9/11 responders to get the health bill passed in the first place. Congressional Republicans repeatedly voted down the legislation in 2010. A renewed push in 2015 succeeded at the last minute ― but only after sick and dying 9/11 responders made dozens of emotional lobbying trips to Congress and former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart amplified the cause.

There's more to the article, including some pretty heated responses from various officials, but there's still no explanation as to why 9/11 responders got picked on and what's going to be done about it.

This is why there is no second COVID relief bill.

Mitch won't let the shield law provision go, Dems will never let it pass. The HEROES Act passed by the House has been sitting on Mitch's desk since MAY. He refuses to bring it up for a vote.

There's no telling whether Bob Woodward could have made a difference had he spoken out sooner.

None of us will ever know whether thousands of dead loved ones might still be healthy and living today if Woodward had blown the whistle in real time, because he chose not to speak up all those months ago. It's merely a thought experiment now, a horrifying one.

Anger directed at Woodward does not exonerate trump or any of the other people who also could have told the truth and did not. donald trump and his administration have blood on their hands, no doubt at all.

Is there a sliver of doubt reserved for Bob Woodward? Make no mistake, the timing of his book release is tied to the election to make money, not to tip the scales. Any beneficial effect on the outcome of this election that comes from this book is entirely incidental to the cash and cachet.

Fuck you, Bob Woodward, you conscienceless husk of a human. Bravo, Charlie Pierce

It is possible to hold trump completely responsible for the needless deaths of tens of thousands, possible to harshly judge Woodward for having all the empathy of a dead shark, while simultaneously supporting Joe Biden's presidential candidacy. My vote is locked, loaded, and ready to go.

None of this 👆 will have any real effect on anyone else's vote, so I am in no way 'betraying the party' or letting donald trump off the hook by briefly expressing an angry opinion about Bob Woodward on a political message board.

Thank you for posting the op-ed, Hekate.

Linked in the article:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/09/politics/dhs-whistleblower-white-supremacist-threat/index.html

The whistleblower claims that acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf instructed DHS officials earlier this year to "cease providing intelligence assessments on the threat of Russian interference" and, instead, focus their efforts on gathering information related to activities being carried out by China and Iran. [snip]

The complaint also alleges that Wolf and Cuccinelli, both Trump appointees, directed officials to change intelligence assessments to ensure they matched up with misleading public comments from Trump about Antifa and "anarchist" groups, according to a complaint filed with the DHS inspector general. [snip]

"Last month, in a bid to prevent informing the American people and its elected representatives about Russian efforts to help President Trump and hurt Joe Biden, the Trump Administration announced that it would cease briefing Congress in person, and rely on written products alone. But if written products are being altered for political reasons, or worse withheld entirely, how can the American people trust that this Administration will inform voters on how foreign powers are trying to influence them, or where the threats really come from, and protect our national security— particularly when it contradicts the President's preferred narrative or personal political interests? In short, they can't, and that's dangerous," Schiff said in his statement Wednesday.

They reached too far, and someone finally blew the whistle. Thank goodness for the whistleblowers.

The related CNN article linked by Rawstory is also well worth the read.

Hmm. Where have I heard this before?

https://www.newsweek.com/under-trumps-watch-americas-national-debt-has-increased-66-trillion-1521418 07/29/20

Amid partisan arguments over how much federal aid should be approved to help ease the financial crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. national debt has increased by $6.6 trillion under President Donald Trump.

When Trump took office in January 2017, the debt was at $19.9 trillion. As of July 27, according to the most recently available data, that number has grown to $26.5 trillion, Treasury Direct, a division of the Treasury Department, said.

The swelling debt is at odds with promises Trump made before he was elected president. Trump told Washington Post reporters during an April 2016 interview that he would eliminate the nation's debt, which was over $19 trillion, "over a period of eight years." [snip]

But estimates say the Trump administration will spend $936 billion on its defense budget for the 2020 fiscal year—nearly $100 billion more than the record-breaking defense budget in 2012. And Trump did cut taxes in December 2017 in hopes that the government would recoup its revenue losses in the long term by boosting economic growth, but evidence shows this is unlikely.
