trump family grifting: standard operating procedure from day one.

https://www.politicalflare.com/2020/03/new-york-prosectors-believe-ivanka-trump-skimmed-millions-from-the-2016-inaugural-fund/
One of the oldest and most reliable ways to move money untracked through from an illegal source, directly to the pockets of the people who intended to receive the money, is for the payee to charge the payor double, triple, the rates for which the rooms would normally rent, and then pocket the difference between the “high end” rate paid by friends, versus those charged during regular events. That money is nothing but a pass through and when done brazenly enough can constitute fraud, or an illegal contribution.

Winston Wolkoff was the one attempting to warn Ivanka about charging too much. Ivanka likely cares for laws as much as daddy does and knew the price would be met.

This particular article doesn’t even get into the most unseemly practices that have been alleged. There are allegations that the committee paid an ungodly rate for services to Winston-Wolkoff, a very good friend of Melania, close to $24 million if memory serves (Winston-Wolkoff has the ring of someone who is comfortable dealing in large amounts of money and someone willing to look the other way on highly lucrative pay structures.) Let’s stipulate that over $20 million was paid to Winston-Wolkoff for her services provided for this 4-5 day event, and questions remain as to why such an extravagant payment went to Winston-Wolkoff, with many believing that she and her 6 week old company were nothing but a pass-through to Donald Trump.

I think a pinned information post is a great idea.

Only citizens of states are allowed to vote. Territories are not. It doesn't seem fair, but it's the rule.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_voting_rights_in_Puerto_Rico

I've seen several online voting info sources that cover the rules for all the states in one place, so it is possible to provide the information without too much hassle. See sig for one example. Others may have better sources and more detailed information they might want to suggest.

I'm not sure where it might go, but I do think a central spot on DU for voting information would be helpful.

More than 250K already at the Independence square in Minsk! It’s more than in 1990 when people protested for Independence.

Belarus will be free.

No, it's just a geometric pattern. The pattern isn't new to the garden.

There's a photo in this article showing the hedges from before:

https://www.hotsr.com/news/2020/apr/30/ap-norc-poll-few-americans-trust-trump-/

Also, the roses aren't white. They're pastel, not that you can tell from a distance.

If we're going to complain, complain accurately.

I hate the new garden btw. It's insipid and uninspiring. I don't think giving it a year or three for the plants to acclimate and fill in is going to help. It was gorgeous the way it was, and fixing drainage issues & putting in paths could have been done without destroying the colorful character of what what already there. Claiming they're going to replant the beautiful crabapple trees elsewhere is likely a lie to get people to be quiet about them. "Taken offsite to be cared for" sounds a lot like code for "we know you'll forget about them soon enough given all the other crap we're up to." I'm afraid those crabapple trees are long dead. Dammit.

I can't wait to get rid of the whole nasty bunch squatting in the White House right now.

I thought the name sounded familiar. Alex Morse is a real prince.

College Democrats allege inappropriate behavior between Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse and college student
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213871257

The student organization banned the mayor from attending future events. In a letter to Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse on Thursday, the College Democrats of Massachusetts disavowed their groups from the progressive hopeful, alleging that Morse had inappropriate sexual relations with college students before and during his congressional campaign and used “his position of power for romantic or sexual gain.”

“Numerous incidents over the course of several years have shown that it is no longer appropriate to encourage interaction between College Democrats and Alex Morse,” according to the letter, which was provided to the Massachusetts Daily Collegian by a source inside one of the student organizations.

Democratic House candidate in Massachusetts apologizes after being accused of inappropriate behavior
https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142557036

In an email to Morse on Thursday, representatives for the College Democrats of Massachusetts, UMass Amherst Democrats and Amherst College Democrats wrote that Morse was "no longer welcome" at their events following "numerous incidents over the course of several years" in which they allege the candidate used their events and took advantage of his status, as an elected official and lecturer at UMass Amherst, to meet "college-aged students" and then proceed to contact individuals via social media, which they said "made young college students uncomfortable."

"We have heard countless stories of Morse adding students to his 'Close Friends Story' and Direct Messaging members of College Democrats on Instagram in a way that makes these students feel pressured to respond due to his status," they wrote. "Even if these scenarios are mutually consensual, the pattern of Morse using his platform and taking advantage of his position of power for romantic or sexual gain, specifically toward young students, is unacceptable."

Bowman pauses endorsement of Alex Morse after allegations of inappropriate sexual relations
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213906187

"As a school principal, I believe it’s important to listen to students and to be sensitive to the unequal power dynamics in these relationships," Bowman said in a statement to the Hill. "That’s why I’ve decided to put a pause on my endorsement and any campaign activity for Alex Morse while we learn more about the situation."

Bowman's statement comes after the Sunrise Movement suspended its campaigning for Morse. Additionally, the group’s Western Massachusetts Coalition announced on Monday that its members voted to rescind its endorsement of the Holyoke mayor. [snip]

Morse is facing an investigation into allegations that he had sexual relationships with students while teaching at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

The mayor has maintained that the relationships were consensual and that he did not use his position of power as mayor or as a lecturer to take advantage of students.

All this and he turns a blind eye to police brutality during his tenure as mayor? What a guy.

AGREED. Dovetails nicely with another article from the same site, posted earlier today:

CEO compensation surged 14% in 2019 to $21.3 million
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213951907

Chief executive officers (CEOs) of the largest firms in the U.S. earn far more today than they did in the mid-1990s and many times what they earned in the 1960s or late 1970s. They also earn far more than the typical worker, and their pay—which relies heavily on stock-related compensation— has grown much more rapidly than typical worker pay. Importantly, rising CEO pay does not reflect rising value of skills, but rather CEOs’ use of their power to set their own pay. And this growing earning power at the top has been driving the growth of inequality in our country.

Why it matters: Exorbitant CEO pay is a major contributor to rising inequality that we could safely do away with. CEOs are getting more because of their power to set pay—and because so much of their pay (about three-fourths) is stock-related, not because they are increasing productivity or possess specific, high-demand skills. This escalation of CEO compensation, and of executive compensation more generally, has fueled the growth of top 1.0% and top 0.1% incomes, leaving less of the fruits of economic growth for ordinary workers and widening the gap between very high earners and the bottom 90%. The economy would suffer no harm if CEOs were paid less (or were taxed more).

Yes. So embarrassed on behalf of the country, so relieved and grateful

that the Carter Center is stepping up for us. Thank goodness for Jimmy Carter.

August 22, 2020

I know. I can't imagine how anyone ever thought "go hungry for me" was a reasonable approach

to campaign fundraising. With so many people unemployed and relying on food banks already and her party refusing to help them, McSally asks for more sacrifice? The level of detached entitlement there just sends the mind reeling.

This: "I always felt like an onlooker to something produced for those in the room"

That perfectly describes how I felt about prior conventions. Watching a bunch of strangers have a big party for days just didn't appeal to me. I'd catch important speeches here and there and watch the balloon drop, but that was it. This convention came to me, and joined me in my home, making me (and all of us at home) feel like the focus, rather than expecting me to engage as a third party looking on from afar. It was a joy to meet so many new faces from all over the country and hear their stories. Every person involved was making an extra effort to reach out the audience at home, making the speeches seem much more engaging and personal.

I didn't plan to watch the entire eight hours or so, but I did, and enjoyed the heck out of it. I agree with everybody else about the roll call, too. That's the best thing ever, and I'd love to see it become a permanent fixture.

August 21, 2020

She did go there.

Someone finally, clearly called out trump as a clear and present danger to our country. Thank you, Hillary Clinton. And thank you, Rachel, for ignoring the 'out of time' signal to ask her about Navalny. The topic desperately needed to be addressed, especially given our government is ignoring it.
