Carmakers want emission, CAFE tweaks, not huge rollbacks, but won't say so publicly

As promised, the Trump administration has embarked on regulatory rollbacks across many fronts, some immediate and others taking longer.

It remains unclear whether the EPA's plan to loosen carbon-dioxide emission limits for 2022 through 2025 vehicles will survive inevitable court challenges.

However, despite shrill rhetoric from environmental groups, automakers in general—especially the Detroit Three—don't want those standards tossed out the window.

They might like to see them delayed, and some minor technical details adjusted to provide more credit for specific technologies.

But they do not want, nor have they lobbied for, wholesale abolition of carbon-emission rules and corporate average fuel economy limits, overseen by the EPA and NHTSA, respectively.

Line 5 oil pipelines temporarily shut down due to power outage

Sixteen sections of underwater oil and gas pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac were found unsupported on the Great Lakes bottom during 2003 inspections — spans of 140 feet or longer, well beyond state requirements for mooring the pipe.

The underwater oil and natural gas pipeline between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas has been temporarily shut down because of a power outage at an Enbridge terminal in Wisconsin.

Enbridge, the Canadian company that owns and operates Line 5, said in a statement Sunday that the underwater pipelines will remain down until severe weather improves at the Straits of Mackinac. Line 5 will restart as soon as possible.

Gale-force winds of about 40 m.p.h. and a mix of snow and sleet hit northern Michigan on Sunday, causing waves of about five feet in the Straits, according to the National Weather Service.

The temporary shutdown of Line 5 comes days after the discovery of three dents in the pipelines -- a revelation that raised concerns among state officials and others about the severity of the damage. Enbridge described the dents as small and indicated the pipelines' structural integrity had not been compromised.

Out of order signs pop up at Vermont gas pumps

BURLINGTON, Vt. Some businesses in Vermont have stopped selling gasoline as they decide whether to replace their underground tanks.

As of January first, 26 Vermont facilities still needed to replace 61 single-walled tanks as part of a 2013 law.

Replacing the tanks could cost between $100,000 to $200,000 thousand dollars to replace tanks that work perfectly fine.

Charlie Handy's family has owned Handy's Service station in Burlington for almost 50 years.

"Now I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to do the tanks. Or if it's not worth it for me to do the tanks," Handy said.

The business has single- walled underground gas tanks.

Handy has to switch them out with double- walled tanks if they want to remove the out of order bags.

The Department of Environmental Conservation said it's a safety issue. Gas in single walled tanks is more likely to leak into the soil or ground water.

Holocaust victims can still be helped, more than 70 years later

GLENS FALLS — More than 70 years after the Holocaust, there are still things people can do to help the Jews who were murdered.

People can help care for the abandoned cemeteries that hold the victims' ancestors, said Dr. Michael Lozman, an orthodontist from Latham.

That was the message at Sunday’s Holocaust Remembrance Day event at Congregation Shaaray Tefila. Lozman described his one-man effort to restore Eastern European Jewish cemeteries that had been abandoned ever since the Jewish communities there were destroyed during the Holocaust.

"What can you do for those Jews who were murdered? Restore their family cemeteries. It's our obligation, our responsibility," he said.
