Chrysler rescuing Sesame Street

Congress is set to drop funding for the long-standing educational children’s show Sesame Street — but Chrysler is taking their place, by sponsoring the half-century-old show and using its “Muppet” characters in promotional videos.

Tim Kuniskis wrote, “As a trusted family brand, we were looking for a like-minded partner who possessed a thoughtful and engaging approach.” The Sesame Street partnership will show off the Chrysler Pacifica’s “unprecedented 115 safety, security and technology innovations.”

Steve Youngwood, Chief Operating Officer of Sesame Workshop, wrote, “We’re thrilled to work with a brand that stands for a deep commitment to families and children.”

Chrysler will both sponsor the PBS show and use Sesame characters in ten co-branded videos for parents which launched today.

Before the Orange Menace, incoming presidents reached out to former presidents

Regardless of party. LBJ got advice from Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter reached out to the only still living presidents, Nixon and Ford, and amazingly he became close friends with his former opponent. Ford helped Carter deal with Congress and later did work on behalf of the Carter Center. He asked Jimmy Carter to give the eulogy at his funeral, they developed such a trusting relationship. Carter also went on diplomatic missions for both GHW Bush and Bill Clinton. This hateful animosity is new and unique with Trump.

Fracking can contaminate rivers and lakes with radioactive material, study finds

Stream sediments were found to be so radioactive they were nearly at the level that would require disposal in a specialist facility in some US states

The vast amount of waste water produced by fracking can contaminate rivers, lakes and other waterways with radioactive material and hormone-affecting chemicals, according to new research.

The study tested sediments and groundwater downstream of a treatment plant in Pennsylvania that was designed to make the water used as part of the fracking process fit for release into the environment.

The scientists, from Pennsylvania State University and other academic institutions, discovered that despite this process there were “high loads of chloride, barium, strontium, radium and organic compounds” in the Conemaugh River watershed.

Stream sediments in Blacklick Creek, just downstream from one treatment plant, were found to contain about 200 times the level of radium upstream of the plant.

The highest concentration of radium found was just 14 per cent below the level at which it would have to be treated as radioactive waste in some US states.

Medical marijuana patient contests driving ban

A Vermont man has challenged a state ruling that denies him the right to drive because he uses medical marijuana.

David Ballard, 55, of Milton, lost his license for 90 days last year after being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, court records show.

The criminal charge was dropped, and Ballard, who suffers from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, successfully completed an alcohol-education program, followed by counseling at the Howard Center.

Through it all, Ballard continued his prescribed use of cannabis, which he says eases pain and anxiety symptoms of his degenerative nerve disease.

“That was approved by the state — and now the state is telling me ‘no,’” Ballard said Friday before his hearing at Vermont Superior Court in Burlington.
