Trump’s Chilling Promise to ‘Protect Women’ Puts ‘Women Not on a Pedestal, but in a Cage’

Paternalistic protectionism reinforces male supremacy—as history makes clear.

In a late September post on Truth Social, in an apparent attempt to close the gender gap between himself and Vice President Kamala Harris, President-Elect Donald Trump boasted that as president he would “PROTECT WOMEN AT A LEVEL NEVER SEEN BEFORE.” Elaborating, he further crowed at a Pennsylvania rally that as a result of his protective beneficence, “women will be happy, healthy, confident and free” and that we will also magically be freed from the stress of “thinking about abortion.”
Some might read Trump’s sweeping promise to protect women as an outdated, but nonetheless benign expression of gender paternalism, somewhat akin to (albeit on a far grander scale) insisting on paying for meals or holding the car door open—the kind of acts that The Husband’s Club blog characterizes as “great examples of modern chivalry [to] make your lady stand out.” Doubling down, at a September rally in Rocky Mount, N.C., Trump asked, “Is there any woman in the audience that does not seek protection? Please raise your hand.” After a silence, he asked, “Is there any woman in the audience that wants to be protected?” Cheers replaced the silence.
Much has been made, and rightfully so, of Trump’s protectionist hypocrisy. It is hard to take his boast seriously that with him at the helm, women will “no longer be abandoned, lonely or scared. You will no longer be in danger,” given his gender scorecard—which includes accusations of sexual misconduct by close to two dozen women and his infamous Access Hollywood predatory brag, “I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. … I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star … you can do anything … Grab ’em by the pussy.” In typical self-congratulatory prose, his brag that “after 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade” is yet another entry.
Trump’s back-and forth with women at his rallies may, at first glance, be seen as an act of paternalistic beneficence for our collective best interest. After all, who would not prefer to be “happy, healthy, confident and free” over being “abandoned, lonely, and scared?” But, as history makes clear, paternalistic protectionism reinforces male supremacy. It is premised on the deeply subordinating and essentialist view that women are “weak and incapable of taking care of themselves.” Accordingly, we require protection for own good, with the resulting loss of self-agency and decisional autonomy.

Post 120,000!!! Here I am, as nearly every morning, with my kitty, my coffee,
and my DU family. A perfect start to my day! I just want to thank all of you for this journey we share, the bright moments, the joy, the laughs, the sorrows.
Be safe and well. And pet all your furbabies for me!
President Carter: I was thinking about him, about how he managed to
hang in there long enough to vote for Kamala, and how we had hoped he would live long enough to see her inaugurated. Of course, now January 20th will usher in the reign of terror, part deux, and it occurs to me to wonder about what happens if President Carter dies after that date. Would there be a state funeral? Any kind of recognition, anything?
The things one wonders about on a cold and windy afternoon.
Mary Trump-- the target on her back. In our Drinking Liberally postmortem
last night, we were talking about TRAITOR**'s enemies list, and just how much danger they might be in. Somebody remarked that she might well be at the top of the list. It occurred to me to wonder just how protected she needs to be..
Fitting thoughts for this horriific anniversary.
An idle thought, that led to a far more serious one. First, the idle thought.
We know that TRAITOR**, and many of his loyalists (including leon skum) are putin puppets. It occurred to me to wonder exactly what they would do if their lord and master dropped dead! especially before Jan 20. (a decent bubbly chilling for his demise.)
The second is sort of related to the first, but far more serious. I was reading the thread about Ellen Degeneres and her wife, Portia Rossi, moving to the Cotswolds, including the comments about removing the targets from their backs, and they might be safer there. My nasty, suspicious little mind suddenly thought, "Navalny. putin. hired thugs." Being in another country just might not be enough if the target is seen as important or powerful enough. (And this could apply to anyone they so categorized!) I can just see that scum miller being in charge of such groups.
Remember a phrase from early activist days, "Just because you are paranoid, does not mean that they are not out to get you."
Women's holidays ignored in calendars. I was looking through my new
calendars for next year and noticed a rather glaring omission in a nuumber of them.. The calendars included various holidays from around the world, including something called vimy ridge day in Canada, but did not include International Women's Day (which is observed in many countries, but not here) or Women's Equality Day. The omission was particularly noticable in a calendar of "inspiring quotes by women"
(won't make that mistake again!)
Yet one more example of failure to acknowledge women.
November 14/15, 1917. "Night of Terror:Occuquan "Workhouse". Suffragists
from the Silent Sentinels, an ongoing PEACEFUL protest across the street from the White House, were arrested and thrown into the very worst of the "workhouses" (prisons) for women. They were beaten, tortured, forcefed, nearly killed, for DARING to demand suffrage.
THIS is what this country thinks of women. THIS is what those woman-hating, misogynist fuckers of every variation and persuasion, have no trouble envisioning again. Hyperbolic? Considering the hatred, the rhetoric, and its escalation, that I have watched and heard all my life, I am fairly certain that I have not even scratched the surface.
The Daily Bitch*: "I didn't claim to be perfect. I said I was a pervert. A little
bit of a difference there."
*Both a noun, and a verb, depending on usage.
A proper response to the"your body, MY choice" scum is to SING:
Solar plexus
Instep
Nose
Groin
(With thanks for the demonstration to Miss Congeniality.)
"Night of Terror:Occoquan Workhouse, November 15, 1917". Suffragists
who had been sent to this place of horror for daring to demand their rights were subjected to torture, beatings, forced feedings, all sanctioned by the authorities.
Why do I bring this up? Because, honestly, it was one of the first things that came to mind as that fucking TRAITOR**, that felon, that misogynist, woman-hating, adjudicated rapist, was declared the winner, with millions of votes still uncounted. With the increasing talk of repealing 19A. With our rights being stripped away at every turn. 107 years ago.
NEVERTHELESS, SHE PERSISTED!!!
