bobbieinok's JournalCoping with 2 realities at once: the daily diasters of T 'govt' and probs in my own life
We are all doing this and being doubly stressed, whereas with Obama we didn't have to monitor the govt with an eagle eye.
The problems are compounded by the reality that daily things T's govt does or will do make our daily lives immensely more difficult. For me, worry about my social security and medicare coverage. Plus worry about pension, well-administered but affected by stock market. And my son's and DIL's jobs and healthcare.
Oh for the days of the 60s, when we really thought (or at least I did) that we were beginning to eradicate blatant stupidity and bigotry and establishing a better future for our country.
Friend stated stricter gun control wouldn't stop school shootings. Illegal .guns always available
His conclusion: gun control waste of time, money, energy. There will alwats be school shootings with multiple easily available illegal guns.
How do you cope with this attitude??
Was just told AK-15s are illegal. So gun control wouldn't have prevented this, other mass shootings
Many Caucasian Americans do not read well. Does this correlate with the success of Fox, Rush, etc??
There used to be ads in paperback books that the US illiteracy rate was 30% plus.
Anyone seen recent data?
This fact would seem to have something to do with our present political situation.
I haven't seen any analysis focusing specifically on literacy.
Will GOPers bring back debtors prisons like the Marshalsea in Dickens' Little Dorrit?
Entire families were locked up for debt
To those who gave me a heart 'Thank you very much!'
Appalling so few know about 1918 flu pandemic!! 2 phys therapists, 1 RN had never heard of it

Have you read Gene Stratton Porter's books Freckles or Girl of the Limberlost?
These were 2 of my mom's (b 1913) books she gave me when I was in 3rd grade and we visited her childhood home in Pine Lawn MO near St Louis.
The home decorating depicted in Girl and in The Harvester is surprisingly modern.
I always liked her books until I read Her Father's Daughter. The anti-Japanese prejudice that is a central part of the story-line is appalling. And the conviction that the girl must not marry her sweetheart because males are only permitted to marry after they have completed their advanced education and are established financially and able to support a wife comfortably.*
The book really brought home to me the anti-oriental prejudice of the 20s.
ETA - * Thus the father approves her marriage out of high-school to a man in his mid 20s who admires her. After kindly but definitely explaining 'real life' to her high-school friend and comrade.
Has anyone here been to Fort William Historic Park near Thunderbay CA?
We discovered the fort while we were in Thunderbay. It was a major site of the No Am fur trade.
It is a fabulous place. Highlights were visits to the Scotch doctor with his 18th cent medical implements and jar of live leeches. The boat builder was also impressive.
In late summer there is a celebration of the fur trade, and visitors can greet the voyageurs arriving at the fort. I'm sorry we were never able to go back for that. It sounded spectacular.
A truly worthwhile place to visit and experience part of history.
