GOP eyes big gamble on ObamaCare

Republicans are betting that they can force Democrats to negotiate a replacement for ObamaCare if they repeal the law first.

GOP leaders are planning a strategy to quickly repeal the law with a simple majority in the Senate, but then delay repeal going into effect for a few years to buy time to craft a replacement.

But passing a replacement won’t be easy. It would require the usual 60 votes in the Senate to advance, meaning some Democratic support would be needed.

To get those votes, Republicans plan to put the squeeze on Democrats by warning that they will take the blame if ObamaCare disappears and the 20 million people who have gained coverage from the law have nowhere to go.

Sanders: Trump is 'a pathological liar'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday called President-elect Donald Trump a "pathological liar" who "changes his mind every single day."

"What do you do when you have a president-elect, soon to be president, who — and I say this not happily but I think most people who observe him would agree — is a pathological liar, who changes his mind every single day," the former presidential candidate said in an interview with MSNBC.

The lawmaker then said that he hopes to see a new political movement of millions of Americans who "actually are following reality."

"I am working very hard on this, and we need the help of the American people obviously ... to build a movement of millions of people who actually are following reality. And that's the challenge. Real change in this country, I am more and more convinced of it, is not going to come from Capitol Hill, its got to come from grassroots America," he said.

Women's March on Washington barred from Lincoln Memorial

For the thousands hoping to echo the civil rights and anti-Vietnam rallies at Lincoln Memorial by joining the women’s march on Washington the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration: time to readjust your expectations.

The Women’s March won’t be held at the Lincoln Memorial.

That’s because the National Park Service, on behalf of the Presidential Inauguration Committee, filed documents securing large swaths of the national mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial for the inauguration festivities. None of these spots will be open for protesters.

The NPS filed a “massive omnibus blocking permit” for many of Washington DC’s most famous political locations for days and weeks before and after the inauguration on 20 January, said Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a constitutional rights litigator and the executive director of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund.

Trump Considers FDA Chief Who Says People Should Use Medicines At Their Own Risk"

By Sheila Kaplan, Ike Swetlitz

WASHINGTON—President-elect Donald Trump is weighing naming as Food and Drug Administration commissioner a staunch libertarian who has called for eliminating the agency’s mandate to determine whether new medicines are effective before approving them for sale.

“Let people start using them, at their own risk,” the candidate, Jim O’Neill, said in a 2014 speech to a biotech group.

O’Neill, has also called for paying organ donors and setting up libertarian societies at sea—and has said he was surprised to discover that FDA regulators actually enjoy science and like working to fight disease.

Sen. Warren is not a fan of the fast-food CEO that Donald Trump just picked for labor secretary

By Nik DeCosta-Klipa December 8, 2016

Elizabeth Warren did not have any kind words for Andrew Puzder, the CEO of the parent company of Carl’s Jr. and Hardees, who was appointed Thursday by Donald Trump to lead the Department of Labor.

Warren, who since the election has repeatedly questioned Trump’s commitment to the economic populism on which he built his campaign, called the president-elect’s pick for labor secretary “a slap in the face” to the working class.

“Throughout his entire career, Andrew Puzder has looked down on working people,” the Massachusetts senator said Thursday evening in a statement.

“At Hardees and Carl’s Jr., he got rich squeezing front-line workers on wages, overtime, and benefits, all while plotting to replace them with machines that are so much better than workers because they are ‘always polite’ and ‘never take a vacation,'” she said, referring to comments Puzder made espousing the benefits of fully automated restaurants.

Trumps EPA Pick Is Skeptical of More Than Just Climate Change

Throughout the long campaign, and in the long month that has followed, President-elect Donald Trump sounded some odd notes about the environment.

He rejected the scientific fact of climate change, calling it a hoax or a fraud. He repeatedly announced his intent to repeal all of the Obama administration’s environmental regulations. He lamented, wrongly, that you couldn’t use hairspray anymore because it damaged the ozone layer.

And then, out of nowhere, he met with Al Gore, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for educating the public about the dangers of climate change.

While the broad strokes of Trump’s policies were never in doubt, there was often enough bizarreness to wonder what he would do with the powers of the Environmental Protection Agency.

On Wednesday, those questions were all but settled. Trump has chosen E. Scott Pruitt, the attorney general of Oklahoma, to lead the EPA, according to early reports.
