Redneck Christmas Parade canceled for being too 'trashy' (guess the State)

Drinkin’, fightin’ and cussin’ – that kind of behavior will get your Redneck Christmas Parade put up on cinder blocks faster than you can plaster a deer-crossing sign with buckshot.

Organizers announced Monday the parade with a nearly 20-year tradition in Chumuckla was canceled.

“The parade has gone from a wholesome family event to a trashy beer fest,” read the post on the Chumuckla Athletic Association (CAA) Facebook page.

“I used to come to the parade and bring my family before I became a part of the association,” said Renee Melvin, president of the CAA. “I wouldn't bring my children now. It’s gotten out of hand.”

Chicken at food safety summit source of illness

BALTIMORE (AP) — Experts who attended a Food Safety Summit in Baltimore in April should have skipped lunch.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released a report Thursday that says the chicken Marsala served at a buffet lunch on April 9 during the 2014 Food Safety Summit at the Baltimore Convention Center caused a gastroenteritis outbreak that sickened 216 attendees.

The report says of the 216 attendees who got sick, 157 ate the chicken. Symptoms included diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps and, in some cases, vomiting. The report says the chicken may not have been kept at the proper temperature.

Centerplate, the convention's in-house catering company, provided the means at the summit, which attracted roughly 1,300 food safety experts to Baltimore.

First U.S. Stealth Jet Attack on Syria Cost More Than Indian Mission to Mars

F-22 Raptor stealth fighters were needed in case the Syrians used their sophisticated air defenses. But Raptors don't come cheap.

Fears of a potent Syrian air defense system drove the U.S. Air Force to send its silver bullet force of F-22 Raptor stealth fighters into battle for the first time ever. The Pentagon confirmed on Sept. 23 that the $150 million jets had struck an ISIS command and control facility in Raqqah, Syria with a satellite-guided bomb. That was right after an initial wave of U.S. Navy Tomahawk cruise missiles hit their targets around Aleppo and Raqqah.

But the Raptors’ first mission wasn’t cheap. Together, the missiles and airstrikes cost at least $79 million to pull off, according to a Daily Beast tally.

That's more expensive than India's mission to Mars, which was successfully completed Wednesday at a cost of just $74 million.

Islamists Destroy 7th Century Church, Mosque in Tikrit, Iraq

According to a report by BBC Arabic, Islamists in Tikrit have destroyed The Assyrian Green Church, built in 700 A.D., and Forty Shrine, the oldest Islamic religious shrine in Iraq.
Islamists, most likely ISIS, planted explosives around the Assyrian Green Church, which is located inside the presidential palaces compound in the center of the city, and detonated them, completely destroying the ancient church, which belonged to the Assyrian Church of the East.

Similarly, Islamists planted explosives around the Forty Shrine mosque and surrounding tombs, located in the center of the city in Salahuddin Province, and detonated them, completely destroying the mosque. It is believed the Forty Shrine housed the remains of 40 of Muhammad's comrades, who took part in the Islamic conquest of the region during the reign of the second Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab in 638 A.D.

ISIS has destroyed churches, religious shrines and mosques in the provinces of Kirkuk and Nineveh, including the tombs of the prophets Jonah, George, Daniel as well as a number of ancient churches in the provinces of Salahuddin and Nineveh. In Mosul ISIS has destroyed or occupied all 45 Christian religious institutions (AINA 2014-07-29).

4 officers off the job following portable toilet tipping incident

(WMC) - Four Memphis Police Department officers are relieved of duty after they cornered a suspect in a portable toilet on a construction site.

On a Facebook video circulating on social media, officers tipped the toilet over in an attempt to arrest the man.

The officers relieved of duty with pay pending an investigation into the incident are identified as PII Taylor Ackerman, PII Roosevelt Shaw Jr., PII Timothy Taylor, and PII Manuel Saldana.

An officer by the name of Manuel Saldana was also relieved of duty in April 2013 after a shooting that left a suspect dead. WMC Action News 5's Nick Kenney is working to confirm whether the officer involved in the portable toilet incident is the same officer that was relieved of duty last year.

For Polar Bears, a Climate Change Twist

LA PÉROUSE BAY, Manitoba — The sea ice here on the western shore of Hudson Bay breaks up each summer and leaves the polar bears swimming for shore. The image of forlorn bears on small rafts of ice has become a symbol of the dangers of climate change.

And for good reason. A warming planet means less ice coverage of the Arctic Sea, leaving the bears with less time and less ice for hunting seals. They depend on seals for their survival.

But the polar bears here have discovered a new menu option. They eat snow geese.

Because the ice is melting earlier, the bears come on shore earlier, and the timing turns out to be fortunate for them. As a strange side-effect of climate change, polar bears here now often arrive in the midst of a large snow goose summer breeding ground before the geese have hatched and fledged. And with 75,000 pairs of snow geese on the Cape Churchill peninsula — the result of a continuing goose population explosion — there is an abundant new supply of food for the bears.
