NYT-For Bernie Sanders, Holding Onto Support May Be Hard in a 2020 Bid

The NYT has a great article on some of the difficulties that sanders is facing if he runs in 2020 https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/27/us/politics/bernie-sanders-president-2020.html?smtyp=cur&smid=tw-nytimes

WASHINGTON — Some of his top congressional supporters won’t commit to backing him if he runs for president again — and two may join the 2020 race themselves. A handful of former aides might work for other candidates. And Bernie Sanders’s initial standing in Iowa polls is well below the 49.6 percent he captured in nearly defeating Hillary Clinton there in 2016.

Mr. Sanders may have been the runner-up in the last Democratic primary, but instead of expanding his nucleus of support, in the fashion of most repeat candidates, the Vermont senator is struggling to retain even what he garnered two years ago, when he was far less of a political star than he is today.

“It’s not a given that I’m going to support Bernie just because I did before,” said Lucy Flores, a former Nevada assemblywoman. “There are going to be plenty of people to look at and to listen to. I’m currently open at this point, and I think the majority of people are.”

As Mr. Sanders considers a second bid for the White House, he and his advisers are grappling with the political reality that he would face a far different electoral landscape than in 2016. Rather than being the only progressive opponent to an establishment-backed front-runner, the Vermont Independent would join what may be the most crowded, fractured and uncertain Democratic primary in the last quarter-century.

The NYT looks at a number of issues that show that sanders may have a very hard time duplicating his prior success

Judge denies a DOJ request to delay deadlines in asylum case

https://twitter.com/CNNPolitics/status/1078325639197966336

A federal judge has denied a Justice Department request, because of the shutdown, to pause all deadlines in a DC federal court case challenging the administration's asylum restrictions.

Judge Randolph Moss wrote that those challenging the asylum restrictions view this as a case related to human safety and as such, despite the shutdown, deadlines for case filings remain in place. The next briefs are due to the court on January 4.

On Wednesday, government attorneys asked the court to delay "all briefing deadlines" in a lawsuit brought on behalf of six people who were barred from seeking asylum because they entered the United States illegally.

Trump signed a proclamation in November that attempted to prevent migrants who cross the southern border illegally from seeking asylum. However, soon after, a judge in California blocked the administration's policy.

Top 5 Weirdest Things in Carter Page's Latest Filing in Lawsuit Against DNC

Carter Page filed a lawsuit against the DNC, Marc Elias and the DNC's law firm back in October. Here is a link to the original petition filed in that case https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=2179974

The DNC has moved to dismiss and Carter Page file a reply brief that is hilarious. Evidently Carter Page could not find a lawyer and wrote this brief himself. There is a maxim that a person who represents himself has a fool for a client. Here is a fun article with the five top dumb things in Carter Page's brief https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/top-5-weirdest-things-in-carter-pages-latest-filing-in-lawsuit-against-dnc/

The filing contains some cautionary tales for pro se litigants.

Carter Page has submitted this filing all by his lonesome–or, at least, without help from a named attorney. This is generally advised against in high-profile cases, especially those in federal court. While Page makes clear that he is currently studying the law, his inexperience shines through in ways large and small. References to legal standards are occasionally clumsy, rendered fancifully and off-base–or, as noted above, simply missing altogether–and Page repeats the same typo some 80-plus times.
There’s also several instances of languages atypical of federal court filings.

The Page filing makes the following broadside generalization: “During the months before the 2016 Presidential election, the Defendants committed torts previously unseen in the history of the United States and without precedent in the annals of American law.”

There’s also this:
The Defendants unluckily gambled in 2016 with high hopes that some of the defamatory dirt spread with their defamatory Dodgy Dossier deck might fertilize. Now, the [motion to dismiss] doubles down on their imprudent bets.

I have looked and I could not find any reference to any law school where Page is attending. Does anyone know if Page is actually in a law school?
