Biden Eyes McCaskill for Europe Ambassadorship
May 27, 2021 at 6:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Former Sen. Claire McCaskill is under consideration for a plum ambassadorship in western Europe — another sign President Biden will tap party allies over big dollar donors when he starts to name his political ambassadors as soon as next week,” Axios reports.

What was it like?

https://www.facebook.com/lexkrcrc/

Lexington Chapter - Kentucky Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice

Ursula K. Le Guin:

They asked me to tell you what it was like to be twenty and pregnant in 1950 and when you tell your boyfriend you’re pregnant, he tells you about a friend of his in the army whose girl told him she was pregnant, so he got all his buddies to come and say, “We all f*cked her, so who knows who the father is?” And he laughs at the good joke….

What was it like, if you were planning to go to graduate school and get a degree and earn a living so you could support yourself and do the work you loved—what it was like to be a senior at Radcliffe and pregnant and if you bore this child, this child which the law demanded you bear and would then call “unlawful,” “illegitimate,” this child whose father denied it … What was it like? […]

It’s like this: if I had dropped out of college, thrown away my education, depended on my parents … if I had done all that, which is what the anti-abortion people want me to have done, I would have borne a child for them, … the authorities, the theorists, the fundamentalists; I would have born a child for them, their child.
But I would not have born my own first child, or second child, or third child. My children.

The life of that fetus would have prevented, would have aborted, three other fetuses … the three wanted children, the three I had with my husband—whom, if I had not aborted the unwanted one, I would never have met … I would have been an “unwed mother” of a three-year-old in California, without work, with half an education, living off her parents….

But it is the children I have to come back to, my children Elisabeth, Caroline, Theodore, my joy, my pride, my loves. If I had not broken the law and aborted that life nobody wanted, they would have been aborted by a cruel, bigoted, and senseless law. They would never have been born. This thought I cannot bear.

What was it like, in the Dark Ages when abortion was a crime, for the girl whose dad couldn’t borrow cash, as my dad could? What was it like for the girl who couldn’t even tell her dad, because he would go crazy with shame and rage? Who couldn’t tell her mother? Who had to go alone to that filthy room and put herself body and soul into the hands of a professional criminal? – because that is what every doctor who did an abortion was, whether he was an extortionist or an idealist.

You know what it was like for her. You know and I know; that is why we are here. We are not going back to the Dark Ages. We are not going to let anybody in this country have that kind of power over any girl or woman. There are great powers, outside the government and in it, trying to legislate the return of darkness. We are not great powers. But we are the light. Nobody can put us out. May all of you shine very bright and steady, today and always.

Prosecutors investigating Trump tell witness to prepare for grand jury testimony

Prosecutors investigating Trump tell witness to prepare for grand jury testimony

(CNN)Manhattan prosecutors pursuing a criminal case against former President Donald Trump, his company and its executives have told at least one witness to prepare for grand jury testimony, according to a person familiar with the matter -- a signal that the lengthy investigation is moving into an advanced stage.

The development suggests that the Manhattan district attorney's office is poised to transition from collecting evidence to presenting what is likely a complex case to a grand jury, one that could result in the jury considering criminal charges.

The Rude Pundit: Republicans Are the Extremists, and They Want to Blow Up the Joint

Republicans Are the Extremists, and They Want to Blow Up the Joint

snip//

Every time a conservative launches into some old song about supposed leftist extremists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Bernie Sanders, I just think, "You dumb motherfuckers wouldn’t know how to deal with real left-wing extremists. You think drum-circle kids with Antifa tattoos and Bernie memes are radical? The fuck are you talking about? Health care-for-all is no more socialist than roads and fire departments. Those are public goods. You think a higher tax rate on the rich is some kind communist plot? You couldn’t fucking take some genuine motherfucking wealth redistributionists who will strip the rich people of their money and property at the end of gun, if necessary. We’re talking people who would fucking blow up Trump Tower. We're talking environmental warriors and armed Marxists ready to bring capital to its knees. But you know what? On the left, we don’t give those real radicals the keys to the party. The right fucking elects its extremists. Its racists. Its conspiracy nuts. Its gun nuts. They’re running the joint now. We have to bargain with terrorists when we try to reason with Republicans. Fuck you."

I'm not making this shit up. It's not just Cro-Magnon Barbie doll Marjorie Taylor Greene and her antisemitic grunts while waving a spear and screaming at the moon for murdering the sun. She and a few other hysterical shit babies just sent a letter to the Secretary of Defense whining about "the creeping left-wing extremism in the U.S. military." What's the evidence of this? Is it an attempt to steal military equipment to attack Wall Street? No, it's that soldiers might have to watch a video with a lesbian couple and their kids. Or they might have to do some diversity training. This is their response to an investigation into right-wing extremism in the military, which is not about teaching soldiers not to be racist, but is about violent motherfuckers joining things like, oh, hey, a coup against the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Clark County, Nevada (where Las Vegas and 75% of the state's population are), is desperately trying to prevent a takeover by the Proud Boys, those Nazis-without-the training who have become so ubiquitous at GOP events that, really, the line between the two groups really doesn't exist. But that doesn't mean Republicans want that relationship out in the open by electing them to leadership positions. "Jesus," county officials must be thinking, "keep the crazies in the cellar. Don't let 'em run free and fuck it up for the rest of us."

Getting back to McCarthy, just look at this shit he babbled on about. He said, "Democrats want to control what we read, what we teach our children and deny our history" while Republican legislatures are passing laws that literally control what is taught and what is read when it comes to history. He said, "Democrats want to censure free speech and restrict debate through political correctness" while stripping the incredibly shitty Liz Cheney of her leadership because what she said about Trump and the election was not heterodox enough for the GOP terrorists. He said, "Democrats want to redistribute taxpayers’ hard-earned money from those who work to those who choose not to" while refusing to raise the minimum wage and after having cut taxes on the wealthiest, taking money from the hard-working poor to fund the wealthy.

It's not hypocrisy. It's utter bullshit, and it's bullshit that's meant to keep the Tucker Carlson-watching shit gobblers satisfied. Terrorists thrive on lies and duping the easily fooled. It's how they succeed. And they do it all to please Donald Trump, who is their Osama bin Laden, not satisfied until he brings the whole goddamn joint down.

The point here is that Democrats need to stop pretending that these savages can be reasoned with. Every time Joe Manchin meets with Republican senators, he is giving aid and comfort to a group of mad bombers who want to push the country backwards, who will undermine the things we believe are foundational to the nation, like democracy and freedom of expression and more. We can't treat terrorists like they're honorable or reasonable negotiators.

White male minority rule pervades politics across the US, research shows
White men are 30% of US population but 62% of officeholders

From county officials and sheriffs to governors and senators, white male minority rule pervades politics in the United States, according to a new report published on Wednesday.

White men represent 30% of the population but 62% of officeholders, dominating both chambers of Congress, 42 state legislatures and statewide roles across the nation, the analysis shows.

By contrast, women and people of color constitute 51% and 40% of the US population respectively, but just 31% and 13% of officeholders, according to the research by the Reflective Democracy Campaign, shared exclusively with the Guardian.

“I think if we saw these numbers in another country, we would say there is something very wrong with that political system,” said Brenda Choresi Carter, the campaign’s director.

“We would say, ‘how could that possibly be a democratic system with that kind of demographic mismatch?’”

Two factors perpetuate white male control over virtually every lever of US government: the huge advantage enjoyed by incumbents, and the Republican party’s continued focus on mostly white male candidates.

I like to avoid the “nailed it” characterization, but by golly, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post really, really does it here. Brutally, and to the point.

On the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, Republicans in the United States Senate showed America everything they’ve learned, everything they took away from that sordid event.

Republicans chose a special way of observing the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. They tried to vote down a highly qualified Black woman who had been nominated to run the Justice Department’s civil rights division.

There was never any real dispute about Kristen Clarke’s qualifications for this job. The Republicans’ nearly-unanimous objection to her boiled down, ultimately, to the fact that she was Black, and the very idea of a Black woman enforcing this country’s civil rights laws was apparently too terrible to contemplate. So their strategy was to talk about something, anything other than that fact.

As Milbank points out, Marjorie Taylor Greene had set the tone earlier in the day, paying her respects by doubling down on her new status as de facto leader of the Republican House caucus, comparing laws requiring people to wear masks to the Holocaust.

But Greene was just a sideshow. The real action was on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon. As Milbank notes, nobody seemed to want to talk about Ms. Clarke, her qualifications, her exemplary career at the Justice Department, at the New York AG’s office or at the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law.

They wanted to talk about...this:

...John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 2 Republican in the chamber, gave a speech denouncing House-passed legislation for, among other things, “banning voter ID and other safeguards against voter fraud.” Such “safeguards” have been found repeatedly to disenfranchise Black voters disproportionately.

And they wanted to show their constituents just how strongly they opposed any Black nominee who might cross their path. As Milbank observes, after Thune’s racist screed, but before the Clarke vote, Republican senators voted in “near lockstep to oppose the confirmation of Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, the first Black woman tapped to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.”

Milbank rhetorically asks:

Speaking out for voter-ID requirements? Stalling racial-justice legislation? Opposing two overwhelmingly qualified Black nominees? And all this while publicly ignoring the anniversary of the Floyd murder?

Racism isn’t just a factor in Republican politics. It is the factor. But rarely has it been on display in all its ugly facets as it was on Tuesday.

The party of white supremacy did exactly what you would expect.

And if you squinted just a little bit, you could all but see their white hoods.

Eric Boehlert: The press shrugs -- how Biden made beating Covid look easy

The press shrugs — how Biden made beating Covid look easy
No media victory laps

It’s been a miraculous worst-to-first turnaround under President Joe Biden, who inherited a Covid crisis at its zenith, with nearly 3,000 American deaths each day. It was a virus calamity that had been mismanaged nearly every day of 2020 by Trump and his virus-denying advisors.

Trashing science and urging people to inject bleach into their bodies, Trump oversaw the worst government response to a public health crisis in U.S. history — 400,000 Americans likely died because of Trump’s incompetence. He spread more deliberate lies about Covid to a larger audience than anyone else on the planet, according to a study from Cornell University. "When it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away," he once predicted.

Under Biden, that nightmare has been turned into an American success story, as the vaccination rollout continues to be a model for the world.

That victory was not pre-ordained. Back in January, the Christian Science Monitor noted, “He faces steep obstacles, with the virus actively spreading in most states, slow progress on the vaccine rollout, and political uncertainty over whether congressional Republicans will help him pass a $1.9 trillion economic relief and COVID-19 response package.”

But Biden pulled it off, far exceeding expectations. So how come he never got a victory lap in the press? Why has the media decided to instantly move on from one of the biggest news stories of the last century — how Covid-19 crippled America and killed more than 600,000 people here. Has the Beltway press in the Biden era simply adopted the mantra that only bad news is real news? Politico actually posted this April headline: "How Good News Could Complicate the Biden Agenda." Note that just 25 percent of Biden’s early news coverage was positive, according to a study from Pew.

Don Jr., Ivanka, And Eric Trump Told To Get Criminal Defense Lawyers

Don Jr., Ivanka, And Eric Trump Told To Get Criminal Defense Lawyers

If they don’t have them already, Donald Trump’s adult kids all need to get criminal defense lawyers.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1397312095830564870

Figliuzzi said, “They better have individually lawyered up. Yeah. They have had to have lawyered up because they may have already made the mistake of casually speaking to the organization’s attorneys and the organization’s auditors about what they knew and what their role was. Big mistake if they had done that, because the organization doesn’t represent them. The organization’s lawyers’ mission is to preserve the organization, not the individual executives and officers. It becomes every man or woman for themselves, and in this case, the men and the women happen to be family.”

One suspects that Trump kids all have criminal defense lawyers, but there is always the possibility that the Trump family feels like they are untouchable because they have gotten away with these potential crimes for generations.

Donald Trump didn’t invent the concepts of bank and tax fraud. He likely learned all about it from working for his father.

It would be shocking if Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump weren’t subpoenaed to testify because all three are officers in the Trump Organization. The state of New York has also opened a criminal investigation into the Trump family business, which suggests that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has found something big.

The Trumps may go down in history as the only First Family to be convicted of a felony.

Court documents unsealed Tuesday show that the scope of information seized by prosecutors during the investigation of Rudy Giuliani is wider than was previously understood. By pasting the filing into another document, CNN reporters were able to make redacted portions of the newly public papers readable. New details now visible in the document include that prosecutors seized emails and iCloud accounts that are believed to belong to former Ukrainian prosecutor general Yuriy Lutsenko and the former head of the country’s Fiscal Service, Roman Nasirov, as well as an iPad and cell phone belonging to a Trump-supporting Ukrainian businessman. The document that CNN deciphered describes specific seizures conducted by prosecutors and was filed by the attorney for Giuliani associate Lev Parnas, who’s under federal indictment. The document also says that prosecutors have “historical and prospective cell site information” connected with Guiliani and GOP operative Victoria Toensing, both of whom were the subject of search warrants last moth.

Murkowski becomes second GOP senator to support bill on U.S. Capitol riot commission

Murkowski becomes second GOP senator to support bill on U.S. Capitol riot commission

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski will support legislation to form a commission on the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection, she told reporters in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

“I’m going to support it,” Murkowski said, according to The Hill.

Murkowski is only the second Senate Republican to voice support for the bill. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney announced he would vote for the bill Monday. Murkowski’s spokeswoman did not immediately respond to questions about her support for the bill.

The bill establishing a commission to investigate the causes of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol has already passed the House of Representatives.
