Florida. Double Whammy

1) Orlando area drive up testing site reached capacity in *7 MINUTES*

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/coronavirus/os-ne-coronavirus-friday-april-3-20200403-66gjkedejngszcalrvymwhdbqe-story.html

Drive-through testing near the Orange County Convention Center was made available to more people this week, but on Friday, the site had reached capacity by 9:07 a.m. Workers are continuing to test throughout the day, but won’t accept new patients until Saturday morning. The site is open daily.

2) Florida ICU beds at 60% full

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/coronavirus/os-ne-coronavirus-hospitalizations-florida-20200403-rgylvtodhbdsdgz5fzs27sxjjq-story.html

About 60% of the state’s 6,000 ICU beds are already taken, according to Agency for Health Care Administration data on Friday evening. And it’s still about a month before experts say the state will hit its peak number of COVID-19 cases.
Dr. Charles Lockwood, dean of University of South Florida’s Health Morsani College of Medicine, said hospitalizations are a good indicator of the severity of the virus because most people who have it can recuperate at home. While the numbers of hospitalizations in Florida are startling, the situation isn’t as bad as New York so far, Lockwood said.

And, for me, the hat trick is being furloughed starting April 19. I’m fearing this will be lasting about 2-3 months

WTAF?? State officials reopening Georgia beaches, including Tybee, effective Friday night

https://www.wjcl.com/article/dnr-reopening-georgia-beaches-including-tybee-effective-friday-night/32036285#

"The Governor’s Executive Order suspends the enforcement of any local ordinance or order adopted or issued since March 1, 2020 that relates to COVID-19," said Josh Hildebrandt, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs for DNR. "This Executive Order thus lifted any local ordinances or orders that had closed or restricted access to Georgia beaches."

Tybee officials tell WJCL they are weighing their options regarding the state's decision.

The Glynn County board of commissioners have issued the following statement:

"In compliance with Governor Kemp’s Shelter-in-Place order, Glynn County beaches are open for the purposes of exercise as of 6:00 p.m. on April 3, 2020. However the use of chairs, tents, and umbrellas on Georgia's coastal beaches is prohibited per the Georgia Department of Natural Resources effective as of 6:00 p.m. on April 3, 2020 through April 13, 2020. In order to provide parking, the parking areas of Massengale Park and Coast Guard Park will open as of 6:00 p.m. While using these areas, continue to maintain a distance of more than six feet from others who do not live in your household."

What could possibly go wrong?

Jesus. Even this far into this Covid-19 pandemic, people still claim "it's just the flu"

On a local FB group

I had a reply deleted for calling it “willful ignorance”

The human race is doomed

Why can’t this virus focus on the delusional and the willfully ignorant?

DU Poll - Describe your state of employment

DU represents a wide variety of skills and capabilities. A recent poll showed we skew a bit more to “aged like a fine wine” side of the age spectrum. Curious how everyone is able to handle these weeks on-end of downtime, working from home...or not working at all

Their utter indifference is on display every day. And it's not just the president

How did we ever get to the point that an ENTIRE administration would be filled with sociopaths? And by sociopaths I mean in this way, as described in Psychology Today

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/sociopathy

It is important to note that sociopathy is not a formal diagnosis, but is often invoked in discussing people on the antisocial spectrum, who generally display callous behavior with little regard for others.

'Surreal': NY funeral homes struggle as virus deaths surge

Twitler has shown many times that he has no sympathy for the weak, for actual victims, for those he deems losers and not winners. McCain (for being shot down and captured; immigrants seeking asylum; physically-impaired (like the mocked reporter in 2016)

And he’s managed to eliminate anyone who was near him who had even the slightest modicum of decency or empathy and has surrounded himself with a cadre of yes-men and women. People who act like leeches just so they can have a sense of the power inherent with the job in the WH or as a Cabinet member.

The entire lot could be enough fodder for 20 years of Criminal Minds episodes, with a couple of offshoot shows thrown in for good measure.

And the supporting staff in congress allow it to continue as all they care about is somehow clinging to control in a world that’s ever-increasing in numbers against them. A fact even admitted to by the president very recently that no republican would ever be elected again if EVERY ELIGIBLE voter was able to actually vote!

Yes, we have a contagion running amok. But it’s not Covid-19. It’s even worse than that.

It's almost like it's been on purpose.

I’m a Software Engineer (for simplicity’s sake) and *I* knew how dangerous this virus was going to be back over two months ago. I wasn’t privy to top secret briefings and briefings with the CDC and with Congress but *I* knew. A 2-3 week-long Great Pause with strict Stay At Home orders from mid-Feb to early March and we’d have been back to business, with behavior and procedural changes in place and travel restrictions.

Now we’re going to be in what will be 6-7 weeks, maybe another 2-3 more after that?? And what will be the economic and human cost for a two-month shutdown vs a 2-3 week one?

And you don’t think this admin knew all that?!?! Of course it did. But they chose to DO NOTHING. NOTHING. And still aren’t doing anywhere near enough.

It’s almost like it’s been on purpose.

Can we class-action sue Twitler for his failure to act?

And sue for lost wages and punitive damages?

I just may be furloughed starting April 19. I’ll be able to burn PTO which will get me thru mid-May but I’m still luckier than most. SO many people are going to be struggling VERY soon

The credit agencies need to be put on hiatus, for one thing, too

And those with medical bills, too?

Ugh. We couldn’t have had a WORSE person as president during all this

NYTimes - A Conversation With Dr. Anthony Fauci

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/02/podcasts/the-daily/coronavirus-fauci.html
Today, we speak with Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases, about his experience in the trenches of the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis.

...

In conversation with Michael, Dr. Fauci addresses his differences with the president, how he views his role amid “the fog of war” and what he hopes his legacy, and America’s legacy, will be after this crisis.

“I think it will be remembered of really showing what a great country we are. We have been through, as I’ve said, if you look at the history of our country, some extraordinary ordeals. I mean, world wars and diseases and depressions,” he said. “And we’ve gotten through it. I have a great deal of faith in the spirit of the American people. We’re resilient. We’re going to get over this. And this is going to end.”

WTF?? Engineer tried to crash train into USNS Mercy in Los Angeles: Feds

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/engineer-tried-crash-train-usns-mercy-los-angeles-233500380--abc-news-topstories.html

Around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Moreno allegedly ran the train at full speed off the end of the tracks near the Navy medical boat, smashing through several concrete and chain barriers, before sliding through a parking lot nearly 250 yards from the Mercy, according to the criminal complaint.

No one was injured and the boat wasn't damaged, however, the train leaked a substantial amount of fuel, the complaint said.

A California Highway Patrol officer caught Moreno as he allegedly tried to escape from the scene, according to the complaint. Moreno allegedly told officers and FBI investigators that he deliberately derailed the boat because he was suspicious of the Mercy's intentions and thought it was actually part of a government takeover, the complaint said.

...

In an interview with FBI agents, Moreno stated that "he did it out of the desire to ‘wake people up,’" according to the complaint.
