“As I’ve walked this journey with Barack, I’ve gotten a pretty good look at what it means to rise above the fray, what it means to set your eyes on the horizon, to devote your life to making things better for those who will come after you,” Obama said, praising the President’s ability to “stay the course” no matter what “kind of ugliness is going on at any particular moment.” Then she dropped the hammer, condemning the right’s use of “hateful and divisive language” directed at her husband:
“Charges that he doesn’t love our country. The time he was called a liar in front of a Joint Session of Congress. The nonstop questions about his birth certificate and his belief in God.”
She urged the graduating class to follow her husband’s example and address such unabashed hatred with dignity:
“Are you going to get angry or lash out? Or are you going to take a deep breath, straighten your shoulders, lift up your head, and do what Barack Obama has always done — as he says, ‘When they go low, I go high.'”
“That’s the choice Barack and I have made. That’s what has kept us sane over the years. We simply do not allow space in our hearts, minds, or souls for darkness,” she said.

WOW! A sitting United States Senator opening soliciting the FBI to commit a crime.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley suggested on Friday that the FBI might leak reports of its investigation into presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state.
Grassley, Iowa’s senior senator and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said an anonymous and unauthorized release of FBI investigative materials could result if officials at the agency believed prosecution of Clinton was stymied for political reasons.
“Is there going to be political interference? If there’s enough evidence to prosecute, will there be political interference?” Grassley wondered aloud during a breakfast meeting with the Des Moines A.M. Rotary club on Friday. “And if there’s political interference, then I assume that somebody in the FBI is going to leak these reports and it’s either going to have an effect politically or it’s going to lead to prosecution if there’s enough evidence.”

“I wouldn’t be encouraging it because if it’s a violation of law, I can’t be encouraging a violation of law,” he said. “This is kind of my own opinion, this is something I’ve heard.

This past week — as we Democrats were bickering over which of our two presidential candidates has the better strategy for ameliorating wealth inequality, addressing structural bias, reducing student debt and securing world peace — Republican poobahs were hearing a new campaign chief’s presentation on plans to repackage the short-fingered vulgarian for general election purposes. From the NYT:
“Fixing personality negatives is a lot easier than fixing character negatives,” said Mr. Manafort, claiming that Hillary Clinton suffered from negative. “You can’t change somebody’s character. But you can change the way somebody presents themselves…”
Sorry, Republicans. There’s just isn’t enough lipstick in the world to beautify the oinker who is your frontrunner. Trump hasn’t merely pretended to be a repulsive pig to appeal to the GOP’s swinish base. He is and always has been an embarrassing, racist, chauvinist pig.

Trump believes that a woman’s worth directly correlates with her looks and that a man’s worth directly correlates with the eye candy on his arm.
I was struck by a similar thought the other night while watching Trump’s post-NY primary victory speech, which the Beltway press deemed a magnanimous pivot to a more presidential tone. But it wasn’t anything Trump said that caught my attention — it was the visual image:

Nothing against tall, willowy, blond, white ladies who wear their hair long and part it in the middle: I was one myself before I started going grey. But can you see that photo and NOT imagine a Trump stage manager herding all the short, visibly middle-aged or portly women — if such women there be with power connections at a Trump event — to the rear of the dais, or better yet, backstage? What would it look like if Hillary Clinton tried to pull off a similar power tableau? Maybe something like this?

Clarence Thomas is known for having a very calm disposition during oral arguments at the Supreme Court. He has a habit of reclining in his seat and closing his eyes and recently asked a question of an attorney for the first time in a decade. Veteran courtroom observers say that this doesn't mean he's disengaged, per se—he's not actually sleeping, and between his moments of repose he looks at briefs, writes notes, etc. He's paying attention.
And yet, in the drawing above by longtime SCOTUS artist Arthur Lien of an eventful Wednesday hearing, I will be damned if it does not really look like Clarence Thomas is deeply and profoundly asleep or possibly 100 percent dead.

The American middle class, long the most affluent in the world, has lost that distinction.
While the wealthiest Americans are outpacing many of their global peers, a New York Times analysis shows that across the lower- and middle-income tiers, citizens of other advanced countries have received considerably larger raises over the last three decades.
After-tax middle-class incomes in Canada — substantially behind in 2000 — now appear to be higher than in the United States. The poor in much of Europe earn more than poor Americans.
The numbers, based on surveys conducted over the past 35 years, offer some of the most detailed publicly available comparisons for different income groups in different countries over time. They suggest that most American families are paying a steep price for high and rising income inequality.
