"This asshole is on my side"

Maybe Becoming President Takes More Than Just Being a Dick
Did Ron DeSantis draw the wrong lesson from Trump?

The success of Donald Trump, an asshole who became president, created a fallacy: Americans want an asshole as their president. This misapprehension greatly appeals, of course, to assholes, especially those in public office, who seem happy to drop their traditional practice of pretending to be nicer than they really are in favor of doubling down on being dicks.

In truth, Trump’s appeal is, or was, probably based less on just being an asshole than in getting America’s large share of angry, aging, conservative, mostly white people to feel “this asshole is on my side,” plus occasionally being funny.

But that distinction seems lost on figures like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, senators Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz, and South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, presidential aspirants all, if not 2024 candidates. These folks may be secretly nicer than they pretend, but all seem to hope that publicly playing up any boorish qualities they share with the former president are a ticket to national polling success.

The main example in this genre, of course, is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis has been elected in the country’s third biggest state twice, and has won extensive media attention in part by being unprecedentedly obnoxious to the press. No one can accuse him of being nice. DeSantis’ banning of books that address racism, his prohibiting saying “gay,” his use of state funds to fly migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, and his (losing) fight with Disney are undeniably obnoxious. If American wants another jerk in the White House, here is a champion.

Gives me the creeps-

Members of the public watching the coronation on television, online and in parks and pubs will be invited to swear aloud their allegiance to the monarch in a “chorus of millions of voices” to be known as the Homage of the People.

People around the UK and abroad will be invited to say the words “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to your majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God”, in a declaration that replaces the traditional homage of peers.

The reporter actually wrote that a mass murder is "an angry response."

Here’s the first paragraph from the top story on The Washington Post right now.

A man using an AR-15-style weapon shot and killed five people Friday, including an 8-year-old — an angry response to the neighbors’ request that he stop shooting in his yard while their baby was trying to sleep, Texas authorities said Saturday. The gunman then fled, prompting an ongoing manhunt.

"FLAG"

Wow. What a way to start a reelection campaign.
Transcript
As the sun rises, we raise the flag a symbol of all that we hold most dear as Americans, courage, opportunity, democracy, freedom. They're the values and beliefs that built this country and still beat in our hearts. But they're under attack by an extreme movement that seeks to overturn elections, ban books and eliminate a woman's right to choose. Joe Biden has made defending our basic freedoms, the cause of his presidency, the freedom for women to make their own health care decisions, the freedom for our Children to be safe from gun violence, the freedom to vote and have your vote counted for seniors to live with dignity and to give every American the freedom that comes with a fair shot at building a good life in small towns and big cities. We raise our heads, our eyes, our hearts for America, for the idea of this great country, Joe Biden is running for re election to make certain that the sun will not set on his flag. The promise of American democracy will not break a partisan issue. As your president, I will defend our democracy with every fiber of my vein. And I'm asking every American to join me for freedom for democracy, for America. Joe Biden, I'm Joe Biden and I approve.

Day Two of Tucker Schadenfreude is going great!

The success of the ad boycott and Fox’s precarious position as it tries to renegotiate for an even higher fee per subscriber from cable providers, the real source of its massive profits, should be getting far more attention than castle gossip about why Tucker was fired.

WOW.
@WSJ
reports that our Tucker Carlson ad boycotts was indeed a significant concern for Fox News, which was in fact losing $$$ on his show.

It turns out Fox execs have been grin & bearing it for years.
