WaPo Greg Sargent: Trump's GOP defenders cannot be shamed. It's time to try this instead

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/11/22/trumps-gop-defenders-cannot-be-shamed-its-time-democrats-try-this-instead/

It’s time to drop the posture that Trump’s defenders can be shamed into accepting what has been unearthed, or that they can be shamed into arguing from a baseline of shared democratic values, or into arguing over how to interpret a comprehensive set of shared facts.

Instead, let’s rhetorically treat Trump’s defenders as his criminal accomplices. Not just as “enablers” of Trump’s corruption but as active participants in it.

Once this is accepted, it becomes obvious why they can’t be “won over,” because they are actively engaged in keeping the corruption in question from getting fully uncovered, in the belief that they, too, benefit from it, and that they, too, lose out if it’s exposed.

The notion that Trump’s defenders can be shamed into facing up to what has happened here is all-pervasive. It includes the have-you-no-shame lectures delivered to Republicans who smeared Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman for supposed dual-loyalties.

question about expediting cases in federal court

I know I already asked a question in GD, last one for the day.

I know expediting cases in federal court is not a common thing. However, I've seen it done.

Is it simply dependent on the proclivities of the federal judges and not on any case law, statute or rule ? I would think the House committees have a very good argument to expedite cases, but, I have no idea.

Anyone know the answer to this ? It's important to note, I am asking about federal courts, not state courts. Thank you sincerely for your time and expertise!

question about Rep. Will Hurd (R-23) and his apparent devotion to Trumpism

I guess I should have expected Hurd to say this but, no, I was shocked. Anyone else in TX shocked ?

Serious question: What will it take for Senate Republicans to vote for impeachment ?

I ask this question, partially because of this tweet:

https://twitter.com/waltshaub/status/1197643632041512963

Current thinking is, what, maybe Romney ? Maybe Murkowski ? Collins will do her usual "very concerned tap dance".

Granted, I am a lifelong Democratic Party member and Democratic donor, so the evidence is blindingly obvious to me. I am also paying attention and have been since 2016.

Is the Trump cult really that impervious to corruption evidence ? Would it take the economy cratering to 2008 or Great Depression levels for them to wake up ?

Sondland Kept Pompeo Informed on Ukraine Pressure Campaign

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — Gordon D. Sondland, the diplomat at the center of the House impeachment inquiry, kept Secretary of State Mike Pompeo apprised of key developments in the campaign to pressure Ukraine’s leader into public commitments that would satisfy President Trump, two people briefed on the matter said.

Mr. Sondland informed Mr. Pompeo in mid-August about a draft statement that Mr. Sondland and another American diplomat had worked on with the Ukrainians that they hoped would persuade Mr. Trump to grant Ukraine’s new president the Oval Office meeting he was seeking, the people said.

Later that month, Mr. Sondland discussed with Mr. Pompeo the possibility of pushing the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to pledge during a planned meeting with Mr. Trump in Warsaw that he would take the steps being sought by Mr. Trump as a way to break the logjam in relations between the two countries, the people said.

Mr. Pompeo expressed his approval of the plan, they said, but Mr. Trump later canceled his trip to Poland.

Faux News trying to promote smear that Lt. Col. Vindman was offered Ukraine Defense Minister

https://twitter.com/Susan_Hennessey/status/1196880981405376512

Oleksandr Danylyuk, Ukraine’s former national security and defense council chairman, said that he was not serious when he asked Vindman about potentially becoming Ukraine’s defense minister.

Danylyuk said that in context, the offer was a joke, as Vindman suggested it might have been.

“We had much more serious issues to discuss with different people,” Danylyuk said. “Clearly this was just a joke.”

Today in Syria: Russia takes control of main U.S. military facility abandoned earlier this week by American forces on Trump’s orders. This area is south of Kobani and went to Russia under the Putin-Erdogan deal. Russia now also owns the airstrip we built.

So f*****g disgraceful! So unnecessary, so corrupt, and many Kurds have died and will continue to die. Trump has destroyed any Republican claim to "being strong on national security". Trump is destroying the R party, and it's now the TRUMP Party.
