FSogol's JournalJen Sorensen (Slowpoke) won the 2013 RFK Journalism Award for Political Cartooning
She blogged: "Known informally as the poor peoples Pulitzer, this award is especially thrilling because you learn of it through a phone call from Ethel Kennedy herself. I happened to be in a flooring store trying to find something to replace an ugly carpet in my house when the call came. Lets just say Ethel Kennedy was one of the last people I expected to be at the other end of that unrecognizable phone number. Afterward, I completely lost my ability to focus on carpets.
The award is due in part to my comic for Kaiser Health News, "

Urine Analyzing Toilets Warn Clubgoers Against Drunk Driving
Zouk is one of the hottest clubs in South East Asia, and in an attempt to help the government in Singapore reduce cases of drunk driving, has developed a urinal that can tell how much youve had to drink.
The process starts when you hand over your keys to the clubs valet, who instead of the usual parking coupon, hands you an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) tag instead.
All of the urinals are able to detect this tag when you go to use them they are also able to detect how much youve had to drink using urine analysis.
During a two-week period, over 573 drunk drivers were detected, out of which 342 opted to leave their cars at the club and have somebody else take them home.

Liev Schreiber to Host PBS' History of Superheroes
He may be heating up our screens as Ray Donovan now, but a few years ago, Liev Schreiber was eating up the scenery as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And it's that kind of geek cred matched with one of the greatest speaking voices on the planet that makes Schreiber the perfect pick to host and narrate PBS' upcoming comic-book history program Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle.
Filled with classic backstories, rarely seen illustrations, and in-depth commentary from legendary comics contributors and icons, the three-part docuseries from Emmy-winning filmmaker Michael Kantor (Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America) won't debut until Oct. 8 at 9/8c.

Defenders can’t blame Bob McDonnell’s wife anymore
From Robert McCarthy, Washington Post:
"Bob McDonnell and his dwindling band of apologists have offered two main excuses, one public and one private, to justify the Virginia governors acceptance of so many gifts and loans from a friendly businessman.
The public argument is, Everybodys done it. An additional one, coming privately from some supporters, has been, His wife made him do it."

I do discharge with McCarthy on this: "McDonnells sole, slim chance at redemption now is to make a full confession, return all the money and appeal to the public for forgiveness. Hes run out of excuses."
I think McDonnell and his political twin, Ken Cuccinelli should go to jail.

Gov. McDonnell must answer questions about scandal
From the Washington Post Editorial Board
Mr. McDonnells head-spinning hypocrisy has stained his reputation and shredded the bonds of trust that any governor must maintain with the public if he wishes to be effective and credible. Its time for him to stop dodging hard questions and hiding behind legal niceties; its time for Mr. McDonnell to level with Virginians about what has become the states most toxic scandal in years.

Venezuela shows that it can’t handle the truth
From the Washington Post's Editorial Board:
ITS NOT clear yet whether Edward Snowden will accept Venezuelas announced offer of asylum or, if he should do so, whether he would be able to reach the South American country from the Moscow airport. A cynic might wonder if Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who passed up the chance to rescue the would-be American defector when he was in Moscow last week, made his offer after returning to Caracas precisely because he suspected he wouldnt have to deliver on it.
In any case, before Mr. Snowden flees to the land of 21st-century socialism, where toilet paper is among the many goods in short supply, wed suggest that he take a lesson from one of the countrys best-known journalists, Nelson Bocaranda. A newspaper columnist and radio host with nearly 1.5 million Twitter followers, Mr. Bocaranda shocked his country when he reported in June 2011 that President Hugo Chávez was suffering from cancer news the government had improperly withheld from the public. Days later, Mr. Chávez was obliged to acknowledge that a baseball-sized tumor had been removed from his abdomen.
SNIP
The charges are patently absurd. The evidence against Mr. Bocaranda consists of a single tweet he sent out, reporting ballot-box irregularities in the city of Maracaibo. Government claims of subsequent attacks on government offices were refuted by local media and a human rights group, which toured the locations and found no damage. But the Venezuelan regime has not hesitated to jail political enemies on trumped-up charges.
