Hurling an ax used to be antisocial: an act of Bunyan zen, a pastime limited to lumberjacks and rogue boy scouts (We're talking about you, Troop 531). Silence, the swing, the release. Who knows where it will go? Then a pleasing thunk into a target.

Now, throwing an ax has become a bonding exercise and an anywhere-indoor attraction, on par with black light mini-golf. The folks at Stumpy's Hatchet House have figured it all out.

One intriguing aspect of Stumpy's Hatchet House is that wine and beer are permitted.

Decades before the first unaccompanied child was put on a plane to grandma’s in the care of a flight attendant, a few resourceful parents accomplished the same end by simply dropping their kids in the mail.

This was in the earliest days of the parcel post service, which launched in 1913. Before that, U.S. Postal Service packages were capped at four pounds, which limited the goofy things people tried to send by post.

But when the parcel service began, all kinds of cargo showed up in the mail stream, including coffins, eggs, dogs and, in a few cases, human young.

According to National Postal Museum historian Nancy Pope, the first known case of a mailed baby was in 1913 when Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Beauge of Glen Este, Ohio, shipped their 10-pound infant son to his grandmother’s home about a mile away, paying 15 cents in postage and springing for $50 in insurance (because they were worriers). Records do not indicate whether Grandmother Beauge received her mail in a mailbox or through a letter slot.

Researchers at the Air Force Office of Science Research have developed a method of fiber welding that turns natural plant fibers into molded materials that could be used as components of automotive interiors. The process takes fibers from cotton, hemp, jute, sisal, or flax; puts them in a mold; adds solvents, along with some temperature and pressure inputs; and creates molded parts. No glue is involved. After the solvents are removed, the plant polymers retain their chemical composition but bonds form between molecules in the fibers. Compared to many other natural and synthetic materials, welded-fiber parts are stronger, lighter, less expensive, and environmentally friendlier.

The Air Force recently signed a Patent License Agreement (PLA) with Natural Fiber Wilding Inc. that lets the company use the newly developed process for making car parts. NFW has had success with making car parts out of natural fibrous materials such as cotton, silk, and rayon, as well as sawdust and other waste wood products.

A Maryland man pleaded guilty to weapons and child pornography charges Monday after a raid of his bunker last year uncovered a cache of firearms, explosives and other illicit materials.

Caleb A. Bailey, 31, of Waldorf pleaded guilty to illegal possession of unregistered machine guns, rifles, destructive devices and child pornography in federal court, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland.

Bailey ran as a delegate for Donald Trump before the Republican National Convention and was one of three top vote-getters in the race in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, said officials with the Maryland Republican Party, when an indictment was announced in May 2016.

The case against Bailey began when a package filled with hundreds of rounds of ammunition burst at a U.S. postal facility in Capitol Heights, Md., a court affidavit states.
