European IOC chief arrested in Rio over ticket scandal

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian police on Wednesday arrested top International Olympic Committee member Patrick Hickey as part of an operation against black market Rio Olympics tickets.

The 71-year-old head of the European Olympic Committees and Ireland's national committee was detained at dawn at a luxury Rio hotel where he is staying with other IOC members, police said.

According to Brazilian media, Hickey tried to escape when the operation was launched.

Pictures shown by ESPN Brazil showed Hickey speaking to police in a bathrobe in his room.

Hickey was taken away from the hotel in an ambulance at about 7.00am and was expected to spend the night in hospital, IOC spokesman Mark Adams and police said.

He has been accused of ticket scalping, ambush marketing and conspiracy. Prosecutors have estimated the profits from the black market sales at $3 million dollars.

"We will be fully cooperating with any police investigation," Adams told a press conference.

"Mr Hickey is entitled for the world and everyone to believe he is innocent until proven guilty," he added. "Let´s not jump the gun on this one."

Brazilian police have launched a widening investigation after seizing more than 1,000 premier tickets for Games events, including the opening ceremony.

KABOOM! Andy Murray slaps down John Inverdale's claim he was first with two tennis golds

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/aug/15/andy-murray-john-inverdale-olympic-tennis-bbc-williams
<snip>
Andy Murray has put John Inverdale in his place for saying the Scot was the first person to win two Olympic golds for tennis, as the BBC presenter made the latest in a string of on-air gaffes.

Inverdale, interviewing Murray after he defeated Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro to claim his second Olympic gold, said: “You’re the first person ever to win two Olympic tennis gold medals. That’s an extraordinary feat, isn’t it?”

But the Scot shot back: “Well, to defend the singles title ... I think Venus and Serena [Williams] have won about four each but hadn’t defended a singles title before.”

He added: “I mean it’s obviously not an easy thing to do. I had to fight unbelievably hard to get it tonight as well. Yeah, I’ll enjoy this one.”

Murray’s comment won praise on Twitter, including from Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon:

Couple murdered in Florida - suspect caught biting the man's face

http://www.clickorlando.com/news/murder-suspect-found-biting-off-victims-face-florida-deputies-say
<snip>
A college student accused of fatally stabbing a married couple after deputies found him biting a man's face during an attack late Monday night in Martin County didn't know his victims, Sheriff William Snyder said.

Snyder said the suspect, identified by authorities as Austin Harrouff, 19, might have been on drugs when he attacked a couple in their home, as well as a neighbor who tried to stop him

Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies said they found Harrouff on top of the dead husband, biting and removing pieces of his face.

The first deputy who arrived tried to stop Harrouff with a Taser, but the stun gun didn't stop him, Snyder said. More deputies were called and eventually overpowered Harrouff, who was taken to a Palm Beach County hospital with minor injuries.

Snyder said Harrouff had "super-human" strength and was making "animal-like sounds" at the hospital.

The neighbor who tried to help the couple was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The woman was the daughter of former Miami Mayor Jeff Mishcon- the killer didn't know them.

The Scam Behind Donald Trump’s Political Rise

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-wealth-myth_us_57b09a63e4b007c36e4f1bff
<snip>
For the past year, Donald Trump has been selling himself to Republican voters and party leaders as a master developer, casino mogul, airline executive and all-around brilliant businessman.

What they didn’t hear much about, though, was his single greatest talent: master self-promoter.

Now, with the general election just three months away, they are learning they may have been sold a bill of goods. That Trump was actually a so-so developer. That his casinos failed and pushed him to the edge of personal bankruptcy. That his airline was a money-losing vanity project that he eventually lost when he missed loan payments. That his business acumen, far from brilliant, is now fodder for millions of dollars’ worth of negative TV ads.

“He is, as someone said, the hobo’s idea of a billionaire,” said Rick Wilson, a Florida political consultant who is now working for independent candidate Evan McMullin. “I’ve had donors say: ‘I’m a billionaire. Trump’s a clown with a credit card.’”
