‘The Attacks Will Be Spectacular’
An exclusive look at how the Bush administration ignored this warning from the CIA months before 9/11, along with others that were far more detailed than previously revealed.

“Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” The CIA’s famous Presidential Daily Brief, presented to George W. Bush on August 6, 2001, has always been Exhibit A in the case that his administration shrugged off warnings of an Al Qaeda attack. But months earlier, starting in the spring of 2001, the CIA repeatedly and urgently began to warn the White House that an attack was coming.
By May of 2001, says Cofer Black, then chief of the CIA’s counterterrorism center, “it was very evident that we were going to be struck, we were gonna be struck hard and lots of Americans were going to die.” “There were real plots being manifested,” Cofer’s former boss, George Tenet, told me in his first interview in eight years. “The world felt like it was on the edge of eruption. In this time period of June and July, the threat continues to rise. Terrorists were disappearing (as if in hiding, in preparation for an attack). Camps were closing. Threat reportings on the rise.” The crisis came to a head on July 10. The critical meeting that took place that day was first reported by Bob Woodward in 2006. Tenet also wrote about it in general terms in his 2007 memoir At the Center of the Storm.
But neither he nor Black has spoken about it publicly in such detail until now—or been so emphatic about how specific and pressing their warnings really were. Over the past eight months, in more than a hundred hours of interviews, my partners Jules and Gedeon Naudet and I talked with Tenet and the 11 other living former CIA directors for The Spymasters, a documentary set to air this month on Showtime.
The drama of failed warnings began when Tenet and Black pitched a plan, in the spring of 2001, called “the Blue Sky paper” to Bush’s new national security team. It called for a covert CIA and military campaign to end the Al Qaeda threat—“getting into the Afghan sanctuary, launching a paramilitary operation, creating a bridge with Uzbekistan.” “And the word back,” says Tenet, “‘was ‘we’re not quite ready to consider this. We don’t want the clock to start ticking.’” (Translation: they did not want a paper trail to show that they’d been warned.) Black, a charismatic ex-operative who had helped the French arrest the terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal, says the Bush team just didn’t get the new threat: “I think they were mentally stuck back eight years (before). They were used to terrorists being Euro-lefties—they drink champagne by night, blow things up during the day, how bad can this be? And it was a very difficult sell to communicate the urgency to this.”

Scientists Say Greenland Just Opened Up a Major New ‘Floodgate’ of Ice Into the Ocean

As the world prepares for the most important global climate summit yet in Paris later this month, news from Greenland could add urgency to the negotiations. For another major glacier appears to have begun a rapid retreat into a deep underwater basin, a troubling sign previously noticed at Greenland’s Jakobshavn Glacier and also in the Amundsen Sea region of West Antarctica.
And in all of these cases, warm ocean waters reaching the deep bases of marine glaciers appears to be a major cause.
The new fast-moving glacier is the Zachariae glacier or Zachariæ Isstrøm, located in the far northeastern part of Greenland. In a new paper in Science, Jeremie Mouginot of the University of California-Irvine and his colleagues find that the ocean-based glacier, which contains 0.5 meters or a foot and a half of potential sea level rise, has begun a rapid retreat, especially since 2012. The glacier has lost fully 95 percent of the ice shelf that used to help stabilize it, they say, and now sports a 75 meter high ice cliff extending above the water (the glacier also extends hundreds of additional meters below it).
“This is sort of the second major floodgate from Greenland that has opened up,” says Eric Rignot of UC-Irvine and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, one of the authors of the study. The first, says Rignot, was the Jakobshavn glacier, Greenland’s “fastest” moving, according to a recent study, which is currently based 1,300 meters below sea level and also retreating into a deep basin.

Carson’s thinly veiled message to America all along, even before he entered the political fray, has been that Black America is inherently bad and that White America is inherently good. It’s what all social conservatives believe deep down, whether they consciously realize it or not. But this goes beyond the usual collection of convenient lies which conservative leaders tell their conservative followers. This is different: each one of Carson’s lies is intensely personal, and each one attempts to paint him as a black man who was rescued by the white world.
First there’s his phony claim that he tried to stab a man to death. Even if it were true, no reasonable person would ever see this as an argument on his behalf. But he made up this story because he wants white conservatives to see him as a man who was ruined and driven to violence by black society, but who was then magically cured of his violent nature when he joined a white church and began talking like a white person. Then there’s his lie about getting into West Point, which initially doesn’t seem to be racially tinged until you consider that he emphasized the supposed “scholarship” involved, even though the academy is free for everyone who gets in. He was attempting to paint himself as a black man who refused to take a “handout” from a white school.
Of course the lie about shielding his white classmates from an angry black mob is the most transparently racist. Ben Carson is taking the day that Martin Luther King was assassinated, one of the most tragic of days for black Americans, and he’s inverting it into a scenario in which the black students on campus were the villains and the white students inside the classroom were the real victims. Of course he’s the one who saved the day for the white victims, as a way of paying them back for having saved him from being black.

Ben Carson’s campaign on Friday admitted, in a response to an inquiry from POLITICO, that a central point in his inspirational personal story was fabricated: his application and acceptance into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
The academy has occupied a central place in Carson’s tale for years. According to a story told in Carson’s book, “Gifted Hands,” the then-17 year old was introduced in 1969 to Gen. William Westmoreland, who had just ended his command of U.S. forces in Vietnam, and the two dined together. That meeting, according to Carson’s telling, was followed by a “full scholarship” to the military academy.
West Point, however, has no record of Carson applying, much less being extended admission.
“In 1969, those who would have completed the entire process would have received their acceptance letters from the Army Adjutant General,” said Theresa Brinkerhoff, a spokeswoman for the academy. She said West Point has no records that indicate Carson even began the application process. “If he chose to pursue (the application process) then we would have records indicating such,” she said.

President Barack Obama is expected to cite the urgency of climate change as a key reason behind his decision, these people said.

Ex-JP Morgan Broker Pleads Guilty in Theft of $20 Million
A former JPMorgan Chase & Co. broker admitted he stole more than $20 million from customer accounts and used the money to pay his bills, gamble online and to trade his own stocks.
Michael Oppenheim, 49, pleaded guilty Thursday in Manhattan federal court to securities fraud and embezzlement, part of a scam that targeted 10 of his wealthiest clients beginning in 2008.
Under the plea deal, Oppenheim seeks a sentence of eight to 10 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Judge Analisa Torres isn’t bound by the recommendation. She set the sentencing for Feb. 15. The two charges carry a total maximum prison term of 50 years.

FOX LAKE, Ill. (AP) — The latest developments in the investigation into the September shooting death of an Illinois police officer (all times local):

An official says an Illinois police officer who killed himself tried to arrange for a gang member "to put a hit" on a village administrator because he feared she would discover he had been embezzling money.
Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Christopher Covelli also said Thursday that investigators found packets of cocaine in Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz's desk after his Sept. 1 death.
Covelli says investigators recovered deleted text messages in which Gliniewicz mentioned the possibility of planting something on the administrator, Anne Marrin, although he says they don't know if that's why he had the cocaine.
