Chuck Grassley leaves door open to postpone Brett Kavanaugh vote

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley is leaving the possibility that the Senate Judiciary Committee may not vote Friday on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Grassley, an Iowa Republican who chairs the judiciary panel, was asked Wednesday during a weekly teleconference call with Iowa reporters whether he was considering pulling the plug on Kavanaugh's nomination in the wake of continued accusations of sexual assault.
"Well you are asking me to speculate. But here is where we are: You take this one step at a time," Grassley said. He promised to provide Christine Blasey Ford, an accuser of Kavanaugh, as well as the nominee, a "fair and respectful venue" at a committee meeting on Thursday. He added he will make no decisions until the meeting is concluded.

The woman at the center of the story, Deborah Ramirez, who is fifty-three, attended Yale with Kavanaugh, where she studied sociology and psychology. Later, she spent years working for an organization that supports victims of domestic violence. The New Yorker contacted Ramirez after learning of her possible involvement in an incident involving Kavanaugh. The allegation was conveyed to Democratic senators by a civil-rights lawyer. For Ramirez, the sudden attention has been unwelcome, and prompted difficult choices. She was at first hesitant to speak publicly, partly because her memories contained gaps because she had been drinking at the time of the alleged incident. In her initial conversations with The New Yorker, she was reluctant to characterize Kavanaugh’s role in the alleged incident with certainty. After six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney, Ramirez said that she felt confident enough of her recollections to say that she remembers Kavanaugh had exposed himself at a drunken dormitory party, thrust his penis in her face, and caused her to touch it without her consent as she pushed him away. Ramirez is now calling for the F.B.I. to investigate Kavanaugh’s role in the incident. “I would think an F.B.I. investigation would be warranted,” she said.
In a statement, Kavanaugh wrote, “This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen. The people who knew me then know that this did not happen, and have said so. This is a smear, plain and simple. I look forward to testifying on Thursday about the truth, and defending my good name—and the reputation for character and integrity I have spent a lifetime building—against these last-minute allegations.”
The White House spokesperson Kerri Kupec said the Administration stood by Kavanaugh. “This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats designed to tear down a good man. This claim is denied by all who were said to be present and is wholly inconsistent with what many women and men who knew Judge Kavanaugh at the time in college say. The White House stands firmly behind Judge Kavanaugh.”

After a briefing on the recovery effort in North Carolina, Trump helped hand out hot dogs and chips at a Baptist church in New Bern, a riverfront city that experienced severe flooding. The president leaned over and checked in with people as they drove through to pick up food.

Pardon us, but was it only three weeks ago that President Trump expressed “such respect” for Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman and freshly minted felon, who had refused to cooperate with the special counsel’s office and took his federal bank- and tax-fraud conviction like a “brave man”?
That tribute was meant to highlight the president’s contempt for the decision by his former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, to plead guilty that same day to his own charges of bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign-finance violations. Unlike the weak Mr. Cohen, Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter, Mr. Manafort “refused to ‘break’ — make up stories in order to get a ‘deal.’”

On Friday, Mr. Manafort broke in a big way — agreeing to cooperate “fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly” regarding “any and all matters” the special counsel, Robert Mueller, wants him to.

Desert News: Orrin Hatch said he believes Brett Kavanaugh, calls accuser 'mistaken'
Hatch said in an interview with CNN that Kavanaugh told him during a telephone conversation
Monday that "he didn't do that and he wasn't at the party" where the incident is alleged to have
occurred, so "clearly somebody's mixed up."
The senator said he thinks Kavanaugh's accuser is "mistaken. She's mistaken something that I
don't know. I don't know her." Asked if he believes Kavanaugh, Hatch responded, "I sure do."

The committee is expected to hear from Kavanaugh and Ford on Monday.
Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said during the senator's call with Kavanaugh, the nominee "continued to categorically deny the allegations" and "also suggested to Sen. Hatch that Dr. Ford may have mistaken someone else for him."
