Billionaires Want People Back to Work. Employees Aren't So Sure

The billionaire Tom Golisano was smoking a Padron cigar on his patio in Florida on Tuesday afternoon. He was worried.

“The damages of keeping the economy closed as it is could be worse than losing a few more people,” said Golisano, founder and chairman of the payroll processor Paychex Inc. “I have a very large concern that if businesses keep going along the way they’re going then so many of them will have to fold.

President Donald Trump says he doesn’t want the cure for the Covid-19 pandemic “to be worse than the problem,” and some of America’s wealthiest people and executives are echoing his rallying cry. They want to revive an economy that could face its worst quarterly drop ever -- even if it means pulling back on social distancing measures that public health officials say can help stop coronavirus. These investors aren’t prizing profits over lives, they say, they’re just willing to risk some horrors to avoid others.

“You’re picking the better of two evils,” said Golisano, who wants people to go back to their offices in states that have been relatively spared by the coronavirus, but remain at home in hot spots. “You have to weigh the pros and cons.”

I've been social distancing between my daughter and youngest son's household.

We all like to cook and the last week or so has given us opportunities to make old favorites and try some new recipes.

Today I baked focaccia with caramelized onion, sauteed mushrooms and fennel seed. I used a rapid rise yeast recipe and it turned out really great.

We made a dipping oil using Olive oil, herbs de provance and balsamic vinegar. Easiest bread recipe I've ever tried.

Chef Andres and "America Eats Now" suggestion.

https://foodtank.com/news/2020/03/jose-andres-suggests-a-federal-bailout-focused-on-feeding-america/

The United States Congress is considering a stimulus package to help sustain an economy threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes a request for nearly US$60 billion to support the airline industry.

But what if the government directed its efforts to feed its citizens? José Andrés has an idea, laying out a proposal called “America Eats Now” in a recent piece for The New York Times.

Andrés – a chef, restaurant owner, activist, and founder of World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit dedicated to providing meals in disasters – suggests US$54 billion would allow the restaurant industry and delivery services make sure the most vulnerable are getting freshly cooked meals during this crisis.

Most of the restaurant industry is out of work due to the virus – an industry four times bigger than the airline industry in sales, and 18 times bigger in jobs, says Andrés. “Now is the time to stand up the private sector…to sustain the lives of our elderly neighbors.”

This sounds like an excellent idea to me. What are your thoughts?
