LOS FELIZ (CBSLA.com) — Diners were enjoying an evening meal at MessHall Kitchen in Los Feliz on Sunday when a gunshot suddenly rang through the air, critically injuring a parking attendant and sending patrons into a panic.

Around 7 p.m., a man drove up to a valet attendant and demanded to get his money back. When the valet told the armed man that he did not have his money, the man took out a gun, shot the valet in the stomach and drove away, police said.

The victim, who has asked co-workers not to be identified, is said to be in critical condition.

The shooting stunned diners who clamored for shelter under tables. One person ran through the restaurant and told people to get on the floor.

“It was very loud. My ears started ringing immediately and I knew it was a large gun, not a pistol,” said witness Erin Quill, who was eating dinner on the patio nearby. “The gentleman next to me had small a child and threw a table over him like a fort.”

Couple Accused Of Firing On Park Rangers In Dana Point

DANA POINT (AP) — Orange County sheriff’s officials say a man and a woman were arrested after one of them allegedly opened fire on park rangers as the couple fled a camp site and crashed their car into a fire pit.

The couple was in a car late Tuesday near Dana Point Harbor when two rangers approached to see if they had a camping permit.

Authorities say the car took off, crashing into a fire pit and overturning. The woman was arrested at the crash scene. The man was eventually found in the water by a sheriff’s helicopter crew.

Lt. Jeff Hallock says the rangers reported one of the suspects shot at them during the chase. The rangers were not injured.

The suspects were hospitalized for injuries sustained in the crash.

Two Wounded In Shooting Outside Burbank Home

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Police were investigating a double shooting Wednesday outside a Burbank home, authorities said.

The shooting was reported shortly after 7:20 a.m. on the 1700 block of N. Catalina Street, according to Burbank police.

Two victims were transported in unknown condition, authorities said.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male with dark hair driving a silver sedan, according to investigators.

Seattle Police Department investigators are piecing together the trail of a 35-year-old violent felon after he brandished two handguns at several downtown businesses Sunday, carjacked three vehicles and fired on officers before a fatal confrontation with police in Northeast Seattle.

Detectives from the department’s Force Investigation Team and Investigations Bureau are reviewing the incident and have compiled a preliminary timeline of the man’s crime spree.

Police received their first call about the suspect from staff at Storyville Coffee in the 90 block of Pike Street around 12:35 PM. The suspect reportedly entered the store, visibly sweating and acting nervously. He began manipulating a handgun in his pocket, leading employees to call 911.

The suspect exited the shop before police arrived and was next seen at the Turkish Delight restaurant in the 1900 block of Pike Place a few minutes later. There, he spoke briefly with employees before he brandished a handgun at the restaurant’s owner and fled.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A former police officer in Connecticut who reported finding a letter disparaging black officers has been arrested on charges he planted the note himself.

Clive Higgins was arrested Wednesday on a charge of second-degree falsely reporting an incident.

Higgins reported finding the threatening letter Feb. 9 inside his mailbox at the Bridgeport Police Department. Higgins, who is black, said the note written on police letterhead made him fear for his life and showed there was discrimination inside the department.

A state police investigator wrote in an affidavit that the 50-year-old Higgins admitted during an interview he had typed the letter himself.

A recent Kean graduate has been charged with being responsible for a series of tweets threatening black students at the school two weeks ago, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Tuesday.

Kayla-Simone McKelvey, 24, of Union was charged by summons with third-degree creating a false public alarm.

Park said an investigation by the Union County Prosecutor's Office's Special Prosecutions Unit and Kean University police found that McKelvey, a self-proclaimed activist, participated in a student rally regarding racial issues on Nov. 17, but left midway through the rally and walked to a computer station in a university library.

Once there, McKelvey allegedly created an anonymous Twitter account – @keanuagainstblk – and began posting threats of violence against black Kean students.

The first message around 10 p.m. said "kean university twitter against blacks is for everyone who hates blacks people" and a tweet about there being a bomb on the campus, and then continued with several other tweets about shooting black students at the university.


After making the posts, McKelvey immediately returned to the rally and attempted to spread awareness of the threats she allegedly had just fabricated, authorities said.

The university said approximately 100 students participated in a peaceful rally on campus that night with 10 students spending the night at the clock tower, "joining students across the nation to raise awareness of recent racial unrest at the University of Missouri and other college campuses."

That night on McKelvey's personal Twitter account she posted photos of the rally and screenshots of the tweets.
