Your browser history, IP addresses, online purchases etc all up for grabs without a warrant

Your browser history, IP addresses, online purchases etc all up for grabs without a warrant
What the FBI can do with an NSL and a gagging order

30 Nov 2015 at 22:53, Kieren McCarthy

Following a decade-long legal battle, the details of a US national security letter (NSL) sent to ISP owner Nicholas Merrill can finally be revealed

The broad details have been known for some time, and a recent court decision all but listed the personal information that Merrill was told to hand over on all of his ISPs' customers.

However, the decision by the FBI to not continue appealing the federal court's judgment means people are now able to formally see the personal information that the US government believes it has a right to be granted access to without a warrant...

...At the same time the gag order built into the NSL was officially lifted, an unredacted version [PDF] of a court decision from Judge Victor Marrero was published listing in full all the details that the FBI requested be handed over by Calyx Internet Access back in 2004.

That PDF can be found at the following link, and is worth a detailed read not only for
what it reveals, but for wonderful levels of judicial snark:

Burger King manager told grand jury of gap in Laquan McDonald video

Source: Chicago Tribune

Minutes after McDonald was shot 16 times by Officer Jason Van Dyke on a Southwest Side street, several police officers entered a Burger King located just yards from where the teen fell, demanding to view the restaurant's password-protected surveillance video, Jay Darshane, a district manager for the fast-food chain, told the Tribune this week.

When the police left the restaurant almost two hours later, the video had an inexplicable 86-minute gap that included when McDonald was shot, according to Darshane....

...The equipment had been in perfect working order for weeks before the shooting, Darshane said. But the next morning, Burger King discovered the 86-minute gap when investigators with the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates police shootings, sought to make a DVD copy of the surveillance video. Missing was any footage from 9:13 p.m. to 10:39 p.m., Darshane said.

When the video system kicked back on, it recorded two police officers in the Burger King office who appeared to be looking at something on the monitor over and over, according to Michael Robbins, an attorney representing McDonald's family.

Apparently, "Assult rifles" in video game fanfic prove that assault weapons are a real thing

Note: the videogame is "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3"

Hmm, desperate reaching, cynical manipulation, or false-flag op?

Burger King Confirms Chicago Police Deleted Video Of McDonald Shooting

Source: Crooks And Liars

On the heels of dashcam footage of the Laquan McDonald shooting released today, other news is coming out about how Chicago police worked to suppress video proving he was shot without justification.

According to NBC News Chicago, 86 minutes of security video was missing after the shooting, after police ran through and reviewed it but before any official investigation had been opened, and Burger King has confirmed that it was deleted by police reviewing the video.

After the shooting, according to Jay Darshane, the District Manager for Burger King, four to five police officers wearing blue and white shirts entered the restaurant and asked to view the video and were given the password to the equipment. Three hours later they left, he said.

The next day, when an investigator from the Independent Police Review Authority asked to view the security footage, it was discovered that the 86 minutes of video was missing.

Here's a link to the original NBC Chicago report, with further details:

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Alvarez-Addresses-Missing-Minutes-From-Security-Video-in-Laquan-McDonald-Case-353209051.html#ixzz3sRjNiZEE

Earlier this year, a Chicago-area district manager for the food chain told NBC5 Investigates that Chicago police officers deleted footage from the security camera.

The 86-minutes of missing video runs from 9:13 p.m. to 10:39 p.m., according to the lawyers for McDonald’s family. McDonald was shot at approximately 9:50 p.m...

...In a statement, a spokesman for the IPRA said: "We have no credible evidence at this time that would cause us to believe CPD purged or erased any surveillance video."

But according to Darshane, both the cameras and video recorder were all on and working properly the night of the shooting.

Proportionally, Massachusetts has half again as many concealed handgun licensees as Texas

Note: this OP was inspired by research done in response to Kang Colby's OP:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/1172181197

"Gun Ownership in MA Increases 66% since 2010"

Yes, you read that correctly- if the figures I've found are accurate, 3% of the residents in
'gun-happy' Texas had concealed handgun licenses in 2014.

At the same time, 4.7% of the residents of Massachusetts (a state well known for
strong gun control) have the equivalent license

Here's what I found, with sources:

https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/reports/ActLicAndInstr/ActiveLicandInstr2014.pdf

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
REGULATORY SERVICES DIVISION
CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSING

Active License/Certified Instructor Counts
As of December 31, 2014

Active License Holders: 825,957

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/48000.html

Texas Population, 2014 estimate 26,956,958-

which means that
ca. 3% of Texans (or 1 in 33) had concealed handgun licenses

https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/04/20/gun-laws-tightened-mass-number-permits-spiked/KDbdE52Cvdf4xNfIL4r0hN/story.html

Statewide, the number of active Class A licenses — the so-called license to carry category that broadly includes the right to carry a concealed weapon — grew nearly 12 percent between 2013 and 2014. That was a significantly greater jump than in past years, a Globe review of data from the Firearms Records Bureau found.

Overall, the number of active gun licenses of all types grew 5 percent, with a total of 355,272 in the state last year...

...With about 318,000 licensees in 2014, the Class A license was the most popular in the state

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/25000.html

Massachusetts Population, 2014 estimate 6,745,408

If the Globe's figure are correct, ca. 4.7 % of Bay Staters (or 1 in 21) have a Class A (concealed carry) licenses. If Texas had as many in proportion, there would be 1,219,977 CHL holders there

I've been getting a '1930s vibe' lately, and it's growing stronger. Anyone else?

Europe, the Middle East, the South China Sea are all flashpoints now.
As bad as things are now in the world, I fear they will become far worse shortly.

I devoutly hope I'm wrong- but I am afraid that I am not...

No mention of "75% of members support Clinton" in a letter from my SEIU local

Just that the leadership voted for it:

Dear 1199 Member,

Over the past several months, more than 22,000 members of 1199 had conversations with each other and filled out surveys about the issues that matter to us most as healthcare workers. Through this process we created our "Action Platform" of priority issues that we will fight for so every candidate hears our voice and we can improve our lives: good jobs, quality healthcare for all, social justice, immigration reform and a healthy planet.

In order to win the goals in our Action Platform, we must have a leader on our side in the White House. That is why the elected leaders of 1199 voted to support SEIU's endorsement of Hillary Clinton today. Throughout the endorsement decision-making process, we sent a clear message that we strongly urge Secretary Clinton to not only continue supporting a $15 minimum wage on the state and local levels, but also to expand that support to the federal level for all working people. In the richest country in history of the world, we must ensure that hard work is rewarded, that working people can provide their children with a better future, and that we can build a fair and inclusive economy.

1199SEIU's executive leaders had met recently with both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and expressed our urgent priorities to them. From those meetings, we felt confident that both candidates strongly supported our issues, but that Secretary Clinton outlined the most effective strategy for winning the general election.

We admire and respect Senator Sanders, and applaud his message of fairness and economic justice. But above all, we cannot under any circumstances let anti-worker, right-wing politicians gain control of the White House, in addition to controlling the Senate, Congress and the Supreme Court. That consolidation of power by the extreme right-wing would be a catastrophe for working people, women, people of color, immigrants, youth, seniors, the LGBTQ community, and for America's standing in the world. The right-wing agenda is focused on accumulating more wealth and power for the top 1%, while leaving everyone else behind.

Secretary Clinton has the commitment, skills and experience to move our country forward, and the most effective strategy to win the presidency. Therefore, we support SEIU's decision to endorse Hillary Clinton, and we will ensure the priority issues of healthcare workers, our patients, our families and our communities are heard loud and clear. Together, we will fight for a country that works for working people, with security, opportunity and dignity for all.
